Chief Ntekedzheni Makhubva, a respected traditional leader in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, was shot dead in his home during a robbery on Monday, 2 March. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, which has expressed deep grief over the loss of a revered figure.
The Attack and Its Details
According to Limpopo police spokeswoman Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, two unknown suspects broke into the traditional leader’s residence in the early hours of Monday by smashing a window. They were wearing balaclavas and security-style uniforms, suggesting an attempt to appear as law enforcement or private security personnel.
Upon entering the home, the suspects allegedly demanded money and vehicle keys. During the confrontation, Chief Makhubva (59) was shot. Another person in the house sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The chief was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police confirmed that the suspects fled with a white Toyota Hilux (FVN 938L), a laptop, a television set, and two cellphones. One suspect reportedly carried a gun, while the other had a knife.
Community Reaction and Impact
The village of Hamakhubva Ndarieni, located in Thohoyandou, is reeling from the tragedy. Community members described the chief as a humble and respected leader who was always present for his people.
Humbulani Manenzhe, a local resident, said, ‘We are unable to process this incident. Our chief was always there for us. He was respected by everyone because he was a humble man. We are very shocked.’ The community has been left in a state of grief, with many questioning how such an attack could occur in their village.
The death of Chief Makhubva has significant implications for the region, as he played a central role in local governance and cultural affairs. His absence may create a power vacuum, potentially leading to instability in the traditional authority system.
Police Response and What’s Next
Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has ordered a massive manhunt for the suspects. She announced the formation of a specialized team to mobilize resources for the investigation.
‘I have set up a specialised team to mobilise necessary resources to ensure these perpetrators are swiftly brought to book to face the full might of the law,’ Hadebe said. She urged the public to assist police with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
Authorities have provided contact details for the investigating officer, Constable Tshavhungwe Rendani, and have encouraged the public to call the nearest police station or use the Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111. Tip-offs can also be shared via the MySAPS App.
The family of Chief Makhubva has not yet appointed a spokesperson and will comment on the incident soon. In the meantime, the community continues to mourn the loss of a leader who was deeply embedded in the fabric of local life.
The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of traditional leaders in the region. Similar attacks have occurred in the past, though none have resulted in the death of a chief. This case highlights the growing threat to local leaders and the need for increased security measures.
