A 20-year-old medical student died instantly when a truck slammed into his motorcycle near the gates of Ruxmaniben Deepchand Gardi Medical College in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. Harshit Mehra, a second-year MBBS student living in the college hostel, was heading to classes on Agar Road under Chimanganj police station limits.
Police said the truck approached from the Agar Road direction and struck Mehra with such force that he died at the scene. The driver fled but was tracked down and arrested later Saturday, according to officers. Authorities have filed charges against him.
Fellow students reacted swiftly. They blocked Agar Road with Mehra’s body and demanded speed breakers and better traffic controls near the college entrance. College staff joined the protest, pointing to repeated risks from fast-moving vehicles on the busy stretch.
Chimanganj police rushed to the site along with City Superintendent of Police Pushpa Prajapati. After talks, officers promised to install speed control measures right away. The blockade ended once those assurances were given in writing.
Mehra was the only son in his family. His father had died earlier, college officials said. Classmates remembered him as sincere and talented, always active in extracurriculars. He loved music and stood out among peers for his skills.
Dr. Ruchi Mishra from the Physiotherapy Department called the loss devastating. “Harshit’s death has left the entire college community in mourning,” she said.
The accident spot lacks speed breakers or dedicated pedestrian crossings, protesters noted. Vehicles often speed past the college gate, endangering students on foot or two-wheelers daily. Police confirmed the road falls under their jurisdiction and vowed quick fixes.
Mehra’s body underwent postmortem at the district hospital. His family arrived from their hometown to claim it Sunday morning. Classes at RD Gardi Medical College resumed Monday, but grief lingered across hostels and lecture halls.
Similar incidents have hit the area before. Students cited a near-miss last month when another truck grazed a group of interns. Local leaders echoed calls for barriers and signals. Ujjain District Collector has taken note, officials said, and a safety audit is set for next week.
