Trump said the decision had been taken alongside Israel. The announcement came amid U.S. media reports that Washington might have been planning new, intense strikes on Iran over the weekend.

Trump’s Announcement and Conditions for Cancellation

Trump claimed that the ‘perimeters of a deal has been agreed to’ and that the deal would include the ‘Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.’

He added: ‘I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL. The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment.’

Earlier on Saturday, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman spoke with Trump and cautioned him against conducting a fresh round of strikes on Iran, according to CBS News. One source told CBS News that bin Salman’s outreach to Trump was ‘all about concern over the targets.’

U.S. Security Alerts and Regional Tensions

The U.S. government had earlier urged Americans across the Middle East to be alert and ready to leave ‘should there be escalation’ in the region. ‘Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions,’ the security alert said on Saturday.

Multiple sources told CBS News that the U.S. and Israel were planning what would be one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date against energy infrastructure targets in Iran, with strikes possible as soon as this weekend.

Iran’s Response and Regional Context

Tehran earlier accused the U.S. of escalating tensions, saying any regional state cooperating with Washington would be ‘engulfed by the flames of war.’

Iran has not yet responded to Trump’s announcement. The U.S. and Saudi Arabia conducted a joint operation against Iran-backed militants in Iraq on Tuesday, according to CBS News.

Separately, Iran executed German-Iranian dissident Jamshid Sharmahd, following his conviction for ‘leading terror operations,’ according to German and Iranian media. Germany’s foreign minister warned that the execution of a German citizen would ‘have serious consequences.’

Sharmahd was kidnapped by Iranian agents in Dubai in 2020 and forcibly taken to Iran via Oman. He had been sentenced to death in 2021 for ‘corruption on Earth,’ after being accused of leading a U.S.-based pro-monarchist group. He denied the charges, with his family maintaining he was only a spokesman.

Human rights organizations have condemned the execution, calling it a violation of international law. Amnesty International claimed Sharmahd was forced to confess and had told his family he had been tortured in detention.
