Ukrainian drones struck three warehouses across Russia overnight, including two run by online retailer Wildberries, killing five people, local officials said on Tuesday. In the Moscow region, a drone attack on the city of Chekhov set an unnamed warehouse alight and killed five people, acting governor Andrei Vorobyov said. A further 10 people were injured, according to SRN News.

Wildberries targeted in multiple strikes

Wildberries has become a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks, part of what Kyiv says is a campaign to bring the war home to ordinary Russians. The company’s warehouse near St. Petersburg had caught fire but that there were no casualties, according to SRN News, In the Tver region, to the northwest of Moscow, another Wildberries facility was damaged by drones, Vitaly Korolyov, the acting regional governor said. Nobody was hurt in that attack.

Kyiv seeks to disrupt Russian consumer economy

Kyiv has sought to disrupt the operations of Wildberries, which is often described as Russia’s answer to Amazon and is a linchpin of the consumer economy. The company’s founder and CEO, Tatyana Kim, has called the Ukrainian attacks — which have targeted more than a dozen Wildberries sites since July 18, “acts of terrorism,” according to SRN News.

Ukraine holds off on drone orders amid technical issues

Separately, Ukraine has held off on placing new drone orders from Europe’s biggest defense tech firm, Helsing, after setbacks in the performance of its AI-equipped models. The Helsing HX-2 drones, intended for Ukraine, lacked all the AI components necessary for features like terminal guidance and visual target acquisition, according to a presentation obtained by Bloomberg. This has undermined demand for the drones, and Germany doesn’t plan a follow-up order until an expression of interest from Ukraine, Bloomberg reported. A Helsing representative said they were confident in the performance of their HX-2 drones and that several groups in the Ukrainian military had expressed interest in the model.
