Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has announced an ambitious housing initiative, pledging to provide homes for all poor residents by 2029, with a particular focus on landless families. Speaking ahead of the Ugadi festival in 2026, Naidu outlined plans to organize 300,000 house-warming ceremonies under the state’s welfare housing program, with a target of 1 million such events by the end of 2026.
Expansion of Housing and Agric Support
The government has committed to building houses for the poor and allocating housing plots where possible. If housing plots are unavailable, the administration will construct apartments to meet the demand. Naidu emphasized that the state’s approach is inclusive, ensuring that even those without land will have access to housing opportunities.
On the agricultural front, Naidu highlighted that Andhra Pradesh contributes 10% of India’s total agricultural output. He outlined a five-point strategy focused on water security, demand-driven crops, food processing, marketing, and government support. Under this plan, the state government has allocated Rs 13,772 crore for free electricity to farmers in fiscal year 2025-26, a significant increase from the Rs 7,500 provided annually under the previous YSRCP regime.
Increased Financial Aid and Technological Initiatives
Under the Annadata Sukhibava welfare scheme, farmers will receive Rs 20,000 annually, more than double the amount provided in the previous government’s tenure. Naidu also announced plans to expand AI agronomist services and farm mechanization on a large scale, aiming to modernize the agricultural sector and improve productivity.
The state has already seen Rs 14,230 crore in investments in the food processing sector, with the government focusing on further development in this area. Naidu noted that 15 lakh acres are currently under natural farming in 8,168 villages, with a target to expand this to 50 lakh acres in the future.
Infrastructure and Water Supply Projects
Infrastructure development is also a key component of the state’s agenda. Naidu announced plans to establish a large cocoa city near Eluru and provide power at Rs 1.5 per unit to aquaculture farms. These initiatives are expected to boost the local economy and create employment opportunities.
In a related development, Irrigation Minister N Rama Naidu informed the state legislature that water will be supplied up to Anakapalli by June 2026 through the Polavaram left main canal. The government has also allocated Rs 600 crore in the FY27 budget for the Sujala Sravanti project in North Andhra, aimed at improving water distribution and irrigation in the region.
Naidu reiterated his government’s commitment to supporting farmers in all circumstances, including extending assistance to tenant farmers. He assured continued support for the agricultural community, emphasizing that the state government will stand by farmers in times of need.
The state legislature was adjourned until Wednesday, March 4, following the announcements. The proposed housing and agricultural policies are expected to have a significant impact on the lives of millions in Andhra Pradesh, addressing long-standing issues of housing insecurity and financial instability among rural populations.
