Speaking to fans during a stop on the Eternal Sunshine Tour in Chicago, she said the break was “not a reactive or impulsive thing,” and had been made from a “thoughtful and empowered place.”

Grande made the comments after dropping out of the West End’s Sunday in the Park with George revival, a move attributed to “ongoing public scrutiny” over her physical health following the release of the “Petal” music video. Her management cited “endless, ongoing public criticism,” particularly around her health and appearance, as a reason for the break. Grande reiterated that “multiple things can be true at the same time,” and that she needed to set boundaries for her well-being while continuing to cherish her career.

She said: “Yes, boundaries, they need to be set; Human beings can need a break sometimes — And also, this can be and will continue to be the greatest experience of my professional and creative life.”

Long-Term Career Shift, Not a Permanent Exit

Grande’s statement came as she celebrated the two-year anniversary of her album Eternal Sunshine, which has achieved double platinum status in the U.S., with 2 million units sold. In Spain, the album received gold certification after selling 20,000 units — her singles “Yes, and?” and “We Can’t Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)” also earned high honors, with the latter achieving quadruple platinum status.

In an interview with Amy Poehler’s podcast in November, Grande hinted that the next decade of her career will be different from the previous ten to fifteen years. She described the Eternal Sunshine Tour as her “last adventure for now,” suggesting it could mark a new chapter rather than an end; “I could see myself not doing that [touring] for a very, very, very long time,” she said.
