Incident Details and Company Response
A total of five tampered baby food jars were seized before they could be consumed, according to the Austrian Press Agency; the jars were 190-gram (6.7-ounce) containers of baby food made with carrots and potatoes for 5-month-olds, sold at SPAR supermarkets in Austria. A customer reported the tampering, and no one had consumed the baby food.
HiPP, the manufacturer, recalled all of its baby food jars sold at SPAR supermarkets in Austria as a precaution, though the company said the jars left its facility in ‘perfect condition’ and that the recall was not due to any product or quality defect. Vendors in Slovakia and the Czech Republic also removed all of the brand’s baby jars from sale.
HiPP stated it has been a ‘victim of extortion,’ with an unspecified ‘blackmailer’ sending a message to a shared mailbox in the case, prompting it to immediately inform police.
International Arrests and Extraditions
A 37-year-old man wanted in Sweden since 2012 for murder and other crimes was arrested in Vienna-Landstraße on Friday afternoon — the arrest was made by the Federal Criminal Police Office (BK) and the Directorate Special Forces (DSE) in cooperation with Swedish authorities. The man is wanted for murder and attempted murder in Gothenburg in 2012, as well as for attempted aggravated extortion and aggravated handling of stolen goods in 2024 and 2025. He is now in custody at Josefstadt prison, and extradition to Sweden is in preparation.
The arrest was part of the European Network of Fugitive Active Search Teams (ENFAST), which facilitates international cooperation on fugitive cases. The BK emphasized that Austria is not a safe haven for internationally wanted criminals and praised the cross-border efforts that led to the arrest.
In a separate case, a 23-year-old Austrian suspected of selling cocaine in the Wiener Neustadt area between March 2024 and January 2026 was arrested in a luxury hotel in Thailand. Thai authorities had been waiting for him upon his arrival, acting on an EU arrest warrant. He is suspected of being part of a criminal organization and is believed to have trafficked around 600 grams of cocaine. Extradition to Austria is pending, and the case highlights Thailand’s strict approach to foreign criminals under the ‘Turn Back Crimes’ initiative.
Domestic Violence and Violent Crime Trends
Meanwhile in Portugal, police arrested 1,281 domestic violence suspects in 2024, a 32% increase from previous years. The police recorded 15,781 related complaints, with 625 of the arrests occurring ‘in flagrante delito.’ The rise in detentions reflects a growing focus on domestic violence enforcement in the country.
In Tavira, a 51-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 61-year-old foreign woman in her home. The suspect is believed to have entered her home through a balcony, thinking it was empty, but instead encountered the woman asleep. He raped her and fled with her Volkswagen Polo and several personal items. The victim received medical attention at a hospital in Faro. Authorities said such incidents, where burglars commit sexual crimes, are ‘very rare.’
