Deputy Commissioner Samba, Ayushi Sudan, conducted a detailed inspection of the National Highway in the district on Wednesday, assessing the progress of ongoing construction and ensuring adherence to safety standards. The review came amid growing concerns about infrastructure delays and traffic disruptions in the region.
Focus on Safety and Timelines
During her visit, Sudan issued clear instructions to officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), urging them to expedite work without compromising on quality or safety. She emphasized the importance of timely completion, noting that the project’s completion would significantly ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity for local residents.
Sudan highlighted the need for improved signage and effective traffic management systems to ensure the safe movement of vehicles during the construction phase. She also stressed the importance of following prescribed safety norms to prevent accidents and disruptions.
Impact on Local Communities
The National Highway under construction passes through several densely populated areas in Samba, and its timely completion is crucial for the daily commute of thousands of residents. According to local officials, delays in the project have led to increased traffic congestion, longer travel times, and higher fuel costs for commuters.
‘This highway is a lifeline for our district,’ said a local resident. ‘Any delay in its completion affects not just our daily lives but also the movement of goods and services in the region.’
Officials noted that the project has already entered its final phase, with approximately 85% of the work completed. The remaining tasks include the installation of road markings, traffic signals, and the final paving of the road surface.
What Analysts Say
Infrastructure analysts have pointed out that the timely completion of such projects is critical for economic development and regional integration. ‘A well-maintained highway infrastructure can boost trade, reduce transportation costs, and improve the quality of life for people living in the area,’ said an expert from the Indian Institute of Infrastructure Research.
According to NHAI officials, the project is scheduled for completion by December 2024, with a budget of approximately ₹1,200 crore. If completed on time, the highway is expected to reduce travel time between Samba and neighboring districts by up to 40%.
Sudan reiterated the importance of maintaining strict timelines and urged officials to prioritize the project. ‘The people of this district are eagerly awaiting the completion of this vital infrastructure,’ she said. ‘We must ensure that the work is done efficiently and safely.’
As the inspection concluded, officials assured the Deputy Commissioner that all necessary measures would be taken to ensure the project is completed on schedule and in compliance with all safety regulations.
