Elche will host Barcelona at the Manuel Martinez Valero Stadium on Sunday, August 23, at 9:30pm (19:30 GMT) in the opening match of the 2026-27 La Liga season. Al Jazeera Sport will begin its coverage at 16:30 GMT ahead of the live text commentary stream.
Barcelona’s Structural Changes for New Season
Hansi Flick’s third season in charge of Barcelona brings significant changes as the club aims to retain their La Liga title and challenge Real Madrid for Champions League glory. The German coach guided the Catalan giants to back-to-back league titles in his first two seasons.
Key to Barcelona’s summer transfer activity was the signing of Rodri from Manchester City, the World Cup-winning midfielder expected to bring control and defensive stability — his arrival follows the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, changing the team’s attacking unit.
Barcelona have been prolific going forward since Flick arrived in 2024, but have shown vulnerabilities at the back; Rodri’s experience and leadership are seen as major to addressing that issue.
“I’m here to compete for everything, for big things like the Champions League,” said Rodri after his presentation; the 30-year-old Spain captain had been linked with Real Madrid before joining Barcelona.
Attack Rebuilding Without a Striker
The departure of Lewandowski has left a void in Barcelona’s attack, and the club’s attempt to sign Julian Alvarez was unsuccessful due to Atletico Madrid’s resistance. Sporting director Deco acknowledged the challenge of replacing the former Bayern Munich and Poland star.
“What Ferran did we can cover with the signings, but what Robert did is more difficult,” said Deco; “We have internal solutions, but we will make another move; we’ll try and find the best solution.”
Barcelona could opt for a cheaper forward to preserve their finances after spending heavily on Rodri and Anthony Gordon, as Dani Olmo, Raphinha, Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi can all play as false nines, offering Flick flexibility in the absence of a traditional striker.
Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will also be central to the attack. At just 19, Yamal is already a key figure for Barcelona and is expected to remain in top form after recovering from injuries that disrupted his previous season.
Flick praised 18-year-old Egyptian forward Hamza Abdelkarim for his strong preseason showing, with the young striker scoring four goals in friendlies. “Hamza is having a really great preseason,” said Flick. “He’s a number nine, he’s young, and he has a lot of potential, and also he scored goals.”
Elche’s Preparations and Prediction
Elche, managed by Martin Anselmi, drew 1-1 with Deportivo in the opening weekend and are expected to line up with a three-man defence against Barcelona. The hosts will be without injured defenders Adam Boayar and Yago Santiago.
Barcelona will also be without Rodri for the match, though the midfielder is expected to be available for their next game against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday. Frenkie de Jong and Roony Bardghji are also unavailable due to injury, but newly signed full-back Joao Cancelo could make his debut.
“He’s ready to play. He has unbelievable technique and a lot of passion,” said Flick about Cancelo.
The Opta supercomputer gives Barcelona a 68% chance of victory, with Elche at 14%. Barcelona have won 36 of the 56 previous competitive meetings between the sides.
Barcelona’s last visit to Elche in January ended in a 3-1 win, with goals from Yamal, Ferran Torres, and Marcus Rashford. Flick has not yet revealed his starting XI for the match.
