The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reportedly offered 80 Assembly seats and the post of Deputy Chief Minister to actor-politician Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) if the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) wins the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, according to a report by India Today citing party sources. The proposal is part of ongoing discussions over a possible electoral arrangement between the BJP and TVK ahead of the state polls, with talks between the two sides reportedly entering the final stages.
TVK Denies Alliance with NDA
TVK Joint General Secretary C T R Nirmal Kumar has dismissed reports of negotiations with the BJP-led alliance as ‘rumours’, reiterating that the party had already made its ideological position clear. ‘There’s no scope for an alliance with the NDA. We have already made it clear that the BJP is our ideological enemy,’ Kumar told reporters, while urging party members not to rely on speculation circulating in the media and on social media.
The remarks came amid mounting speculation about the political future of Vijay, whose newly formed TVK is preparing to contest its first Assembly election in Tamil Nadu. Some sources within the party have said internal discussions are underway on whether an alliance with established political parties could improve the party’s electoral prospects.
According to people familiar with the discussions, party leaders have debated whether joining forces with the BJP-AIADMK combine could create a broader opposition front against the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The idea being discussed internally, sources said, is whether such a coalition could replicate the Jana Sena-Telugu Desam Party alliance model in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, where actor-politician Pawan Kalyan joined forces with established parties to form a government.
Internal Debates on Electoral Strategy
At the same time, sections within TVK have reportedly argued that the party should contest independently, invoking the political legacy of former Tamil Nadu chief minister MG Ramachandran, who rose to power through his own political movement. The party has consistently maintained that it will project Vijay as its chief ministerial candidate, and while the party has indicated it may consider sharing power if it wins, no major political party has yet formally joined it in an electoral alliance.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran, when asked about the possibility of an alliance with TVK, declined to give a direct answer. ‘You are worried about the alliance, and I am concerned about the people’s issues, especially the failure of law and order in the state and lack of safety for women,’ Nagenthran told reporters, without confirming or denying talks.
Speculation about a possible tie-up has intensified in recent days, particularly on social media, even as both parties have refrained from making any official announcement regarding a formal alliance. The proposed alliance, if confirmed, could significantly alter the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, where the DMK currently holds power.
What Analysts Say About the Implications
Political analysts have noted that such an alliance, if it materializes, could have a ripple effect on the upcoming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and other states. The BJP’s offer of 80 seats and a Deputy Chief Minister post to TVK, if true, would mark a significant shift in the party’s strategy to form alliances with new political entities outside its traditional base.
‘This is a calculated move by the BJP to expand its influence in Tamil Nadu, where it has historically struggled to gain a foothold,’ said political analyst Ramesh Kumar. ‘Offering key positions to Vijay’s party could help the BJP build a broader opposition front against the DMK, which has been in power for over a decade.’
However, the success of such an alliance would depend on the willingness of TVK to align ideologically with the NDA. Given the party’s current stance, analysts believe that the possibility of an alliance remains uncertain.
Moreover, the proposed alliance could have implications for the upcoming Assembly elections in other states, including Assam, West Bengal, and Kerala, where the Election Commission has scheduled polls. The political dynamics in Tamil Nadu, one of the most competitive states in India, could influence the strategies of other parties in the region.
With the Assembly elections approaching, the focus will be on whether the BJP and TVK can bridge their ideological differences and form a viable electoral alliance. For now, both parties have remained silent on the matter, leaving the speculation to continue.
The situation highlights the growing importance of actor-politicians in Indian politics, with Vijay’s TVK being one of the latest entrants in the electoral fray. His political journey, much like that of Pawan Kalyan, has drawn attention from both supporters and critics alike.
