Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) has revealed a sweeping infrastructure upgrade plan valued at R21.7 billion, aimed at modernizing the airport and reinforcing its role as a global gateway for South Africa. The investment, part of the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) strategy, is designed to enhance the airport’s capacity, improve the tourist experience, and support the country’s growing economy.
Major Runway Expansion to Boost Air Traffic Efficiency
The centerpiece of the development is the construction of a new main runway, valued at R6.39 billion. This eastward realignment of the runway is intended to improve air traffic efficiency and create additional space for the passenger terminal. According to CTIA officials, the new runway will be critical in meeting the rising demand for air travel to and from Cape Town, a city that attracts millions of tourists annually.
The airport is one of the busiest in Africa, handling over 14 million passengers annually. With the new runway, officials say the airport will be better equipped to handle increased flight traffic, accommodate larger aircraft, and reduce congestion during peak travel seasons. The expansion is expected to be completed by 2028, according to the airport’s latest project timeline.
Sustainability at the Core of Infrastructure Development
The upgrades align with Cape Town’s broader sustainability goals, which include integrating eco-friendly practices into the tourism sector. The airport plans to incorporate green building principles in all new developments, ensuring that the infrastructure is energy-efficient and minimizes environmental impact.
According to a recent statement from CTIA, the new facilities will include solar power generation, water recycling systems, and energy-efficient lighting. These measures are designed to reduce the airport’s carbon footprint while offering travelers a more environmentally conscious experience. The city has long been positioning itself as a leader in sustainable tourism, and this project is a key step in that direction.
“We are committed to ensuring that our infrastructure developments reflect the highest standards of sustainability,” said CTIA spokesperson Thandiwe Nkosi. “This project will not only improve the efficiency of our operations but also support Cape Town’s vision of becoming a global leader in eco-tourism.”
Economic and Regional Impact Expected to Be Significant
Beyond improving air traffic and the passenger experience, the project is expected to have a substantial economic impact. The upgrades are anticipated to create thousands of jobs during the construction phase and support long-term employment in the tourism and logistics sectors. Local businesses are also expected to benefit from the increased foot traffic and improved connectivity.
According to a report by the South African Tourism Board, the tourism sector contributes over 9% to the country’s GDP. With Cape Town being one of the top tourist destinations in Africa, the airport upgrades are seen as a critical step in maintaining and growing that sector.
The project also includes improvements to the airport’s terminal facilities, including expanded check-in areas, enhanced baggage handling systems, and upgraded security measures. These upgrades are expected to improve the overall passenger experience, leading to higher customer satisfaction and encouraging repeat visits.
“These developments will ensure that Cape Town remains a premier destination for international and domestic travelers alike,” said ACSA chief executive Nkosi Nkosi. “By investing in our infrastructure, we are not only improving the travel experience but also supporting the broader economic growth of the region.”
The R21.7 billion investment is part of a larger strategy to modernize South Africa’s airport infrastructure. Similar upgrades have been planned for other major airports, including Johannesburg and Durban, as part of a nationwide initiative to boost the country’s tourism and trade potential.
The project is expected to be completed in phases over the next decade, with the first major developments set to begin in 2025. The final phase, which includes the full implementation of the new runway and terminal upgrades, is scheduled for completion by 2030.
