Children in Cheshire West and Chester can grab free costumes for World Book Day through a new swap scheme at six local libraries. Families drop off clean, gently used outfits suitable for primary school kids at branches in Barnton, Frodsham, Hope Farm, Little Sutton, Wharton and Winsford.
Councillor Lisa Denson, the council’s cabinet member for a fairer future, called the initiative a smart response to tough economic times. “Seeing primary school children dressed up as book characters for World Book Day has become a familiar sight each March,” she said. “However, with growing financial pressures and the need to reduce waste, limiting new purchases makes more sense than ever.”
Donations pour in until World Book Day on Thursday. Libraries then make the costumes available for borrowing. Unclaimed items go to charity, stay for library events or head to recycling. The effort cuts costs for parents and trims waste amid the climate emergency, Denson added.
“It’s a great way to share the fun — helping families save money while also supporting efforts to tackle the climate emergency,” she said.
Class trips to libraries spike around the holiday. Staff expect bigger crowds this year. 2026 marks the National Year of Reading, so school visits could surge all year long. Schools interested in booking should contact their nearest branch.
Beyond costumes, the council highlights a full slate of free library perks. Cheshire West and Chester runs 22 libraries, plus a mobile service and home delivery. Membership costs nothing. Borrow physical books from any location. Access computers and Wi-Fi at no charge. Dive into eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines online.
Events cater to every age, from story hours to workshops. More details sit on the council website at www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/libraries. Follow @cwaclibrary on Facebook or @cwaclibraries on Instagram for event updates.
The swap builds excitement for literary dress-up without the price tag. Primary pupils often show up in pirate hats, wizard robes or animal masks. Libraries gear up for waves of young readers this week.
