The Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS) in Bahawalpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS) at the University of Karachi, marking a significant step toward supporting interdisciplinary research and academic collaboration in Pakistan.

Focus on Livestock Genomics and Research

The MoU aims to strengthen collaboration in the fields of livestock genomics, academic research, and teaching activities. The agreement was signed during a visit by a CUVAS delegation, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mazhar Ayaz, to ICCBS in Karachi.

At the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, Director of ICCBS, emphasized that the center is a leading institution in chemical, biological, and biochemical sciences, serving as a hub for research and training scholars from around the world. ICCBS has been designated as a Centre of Excellence by UNESCO, WHO, TWAS, and the OIC, highlighting its global standing in scientific research.

According to the MoU, both institutions will facilitate the exchange of faculty members, researchers, and experts for research, teaching, and knowledge sharing. They also agreed to conduct joint research programs and develop collaborative proposals for submission to national and international funding agencies.

Collaborative Opportunities and Knowledge Sharing

The agreement includes provisions for faculty and researchers from both institutions to participate in conferences, symposia, seminars, and workshops organized by either university. This will provide opportunities for academic and professional development, as well as the dissemination of research findings.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Mazhar Ayaz highlighted that CUVAS, as a public-sector university, is committed to addressing industry needs through thorough degree programs, advanced research projects, and advanced technology centers. The university is also focused on contributing to economic growth and creating business opportunities through the commercialization of research.

He added that CUVAS emphasizes research-focused teaching to ensure students receive high-quality education and acquire skills for successful careers, particularly in the livestock sector of South Punjab and Pakistan.

Significance for Academic and Industry Collaboration

The collaboration between CUVAS and ICCBS is expected to have a significant impact on the academic and research landscape in Pakistan. By combining the strengths of both institutions, the partnership aims to advance research in livestock genomics and related fields, which are crucial for the country’s agricultural and economic development.

With the global demand for food security and sustainable agriculture on the rise, such collaborations are becoming increasingly important. The agreement is seen as a strategic move to align Pakistan’s academic institutions with international standards and enhance their research capabilities.

According to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Raza Shah, the MoU provides an opportunity for ICCBS and CUVAS to collaborate in accordance with international academic standards and applicable national regulations under mutually agreed terms. This ensures that the partnership is both legally sound and aligned with global best practices.

Officials from both institutions expressed confidence that the MoU will lead to long-term benefits, including the development of new research initiatives, the exchange of knowledge, and the enhancement of academic programs. They also emphasized the importance of supporting a culture of innovation and collaboration in the scientific community.

As the agreement takes shape, both universities are expected to work closely to implement the terms of the MoU and explore new avenues for collaboration. The next steps include the formation of a joint committee to oversee the implementation of the agreement and the identification of specific research projects to be undertaken under the partnership.
