COVENTRY, England — Family members of beloved pub landlady Michelle Burton have launched a sweeping renovation of The New Spires in Allesley Park to honor her legacy as the community’s driving force.
Burton, known to friends as Shell, managed the pub for years, supporting children, aiding those in need and hosting events for local kids. Her sudden death on June last year at age 62 left a deep void, according to her daughter Pip Sullivan.
“Our mum was one of a kind, our best friend and the glue that held everything together,” Sullivan, 34, said. She now runs the pub alongside family friend Lucy Murphy, who serves as assistant manager, with help from Burton’s other daughter Fi.
The refurbishment transforms the venue into a sports-focused hub, complete with stadium-sized screens, upgraded audio, enhanced entertainment and a new menu. Work began immediately after the February 16 closure. The pub plans to reopen March 11, following a VIP preview day on March 10 where a local community hero will cut the ribbon.
Murphy, whom Burton treated like a daughter, described her as a vibrant character who adored her grandchildren and fostered a girl named Riley. “She would do anything for anyone and was a massive pillar in the community,” Murphy said. “She’s left a massive hole in a lot of people’s hearts.”
Burton long dreamed of elevating The New Spires into Coventry’s premier sports pub, a friendly spot for meals, drinks and gatherings. Sullivan and Murphy aim to realize that goal. “She would have been so proud and excited,” Murphy said. “We want to make her proud.”
Sullivan added, “We miss her dearly and nothing will ever fill the void. But we want the pub to do the very best it can in memory of her.”
Beyond the sports upgrades, the family plans a memorial wall dedicated to Burton. Sullivan also intends to host charity events year-round, reflecting her mother’s generosity.
The overhaul keeps Burton’s spirit alive. Grandchildren flock to the pub to feel close to ‘Nanny Pub,’ Sullivan said. Running it has eased the family’s grief while preserving her influence in Allesley Park.
Patrons and locals remember Burton’s warmth. She built the pub’s reputation as a neighborhood anchor. Now, her vision takes shape without her, a testament to her enduring impact.
