The Democratic National Committee is reportedly working on a confidential report that suggests Kamala Harris’s stance on the Israel-Gaza conflict played a role in her loss to Donald Trump in the 2024 election, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The DNC has kept the report under lock and key since last year, a move that reflects the sensitivity of its findings within the party and beyond. The report is said to have identified the administration’s support for Israel as a factor in alienating some voters, particularly younger and progressive Democrats.
According to sources, DNC officials held a closed-door meeting with activists from the IMEU Policy Project, a pro-Palestinian advocacy group, to discuss the impact of U.S. policy on the Israel-Gaza conflict. Hamid Bendaas, a spokesperson for the group, confirmed that the DNC shared data indicating that their stance on Israel was a ‘net-negative’ in the 2024 election.
During the meeting, the DNC reportedly acknowledged that the administration’s support for Israel had contributed to a loss of support among certain voter demographics. Two other senior members of the IMEU Policy Project also confirmed that the DNC had reached that conclusion.
Independent verification by Axios confirmed that the DNC’s internal analysis of the election loss included the Israel-Gaza conflict as a key issue that impacted voter sentiment. The DNC, however, has not released the report publicly, citing concerns that it could distract from the work of winning future elections.
DNC spokesperson Kendall Witmer denied that the report’s findings on Israel were a reason for its secrecy. The DNC has stated that it spoke with the IMEU Policy Project and hundreds of other groups as part of its analysis, but has not provided further details.
Bendaas said the DNC should share its findings with the broader party ahead of the upcoming midterms, which he called ‘critical’ for the Democrats. DNC officials have said they are incorporating the report’s findings into ongoing discussions with candidates and campaigns.
A Harris aide referenced the former vice president’s recent comments on the war in Gaza, made during a tour stop for her memoir, 107 Days. Harris said at the event, ‘We should have done more as an administration’ and added that the administration ‘should have spoken publicly about our criticism’ of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the war.
In her book, Harris wrote that President Biden’s unpopularity, which she attributed in part to his perceived support for Netanyahu, hurt her chances in the 2024 election.
