About 5,000 vulnerable individuals in Osun State received food packs on Sunday as part of a Ramadan initiative led by the son of former Osun Governor Adegboyega Oyetola. The distribution, under the Ilerioluwa Development Initiative, included rice, beans, garri, and beverages, aimed at easing the financial burden of fasting during the holy month.
Continuation of Past Charitable Efforts
Oyetola, who is representing the Osun Central Senatorial District, said the initiative is an extension of a similar effort carried out during the Christmas and New Year celebrations in December 2025. At that time, the same food packs were distributed to 5,000 households in the same district to support residents during the festive season.
Speaking at the event in Osogbo, the state capital, Oyetola was represented by Kehinde Ayantunji, a former Senior Special Assistant on Student Mobilisation to the Osun State Governor. Oyetola emphasized that the gesture is part of a broader commitment to supporting the vulnerable, including the elderly, widows, and widowers.
“This initiative is part of what I have been doing in the past, including during the last Christmas and New Year celebrations,” Oyetola said. “This is just a hand of love extended to the vulnerable. The food items will be distributed to 5,000 households. This will further help our people during the holy month. I am sure this gesture will go a long way in reducing the economic burden on our people during Ramadan.”
Political Appeal to Beneficiaries
The Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mrs Kudirat Fakokunde, addressed the beneficiaries and urged them to support the APC’s governorship candidate for the August 8 poll, Bola Oyebamiji. Fakokunde noted that the APC has not yet assumed power in Osun but is already reaching out to the vulnerable.
“We are yet to be in government in Osun, and we are doing this. Imagine what will happen when we get into government,” Fakokunde said. “I admonish you all to extend what you receive here today to others who do not have. Use this little gift to extend the love that Ramadan preaches.”
Fakokunde also reminded beneficiaries of the APC’s strong and capable governorship candidate for the 2026 election, urging them to vote for Oyebamiji in large numbers.
Targeting Vulnerable and Marginalized Groups
The food packs were distributed across the 10 local government areas in the Osun Central Senatorial District. The initiative, under the Ilerioluwa Development Initiative, also targeted Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWD) and members of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).
Femi Oyetola, who spearheaded the distribution, stated that the gesture was aimed at enabling vulnerable and less privileged residents to enjoy the festive season during the previous Christmas period. He reiterated the same goal for Ramadan, emphasizing the importance of community support and solidarity during religious observances.
The initiative has drawn attention for its scale and focus on specific vulnerable groups. With the upcoming governorship elections, the political implications of such charitable efforts are becoming more pronounced.
Analysts note that such outreach programs are often used by political candidates to build goodwill and secure voter support, especially in regions with high levels of economic hardship.
“This kind of initiative can be a double-edged sword,” said a political analyst. “On one hand, it provides much-needed relief to the vulnerable. On the other, it can be seen as a strategic move to gain political capital.”
With the August 8 elections approaching, the impact of such efforts on voter behavior and public perception will be closely watched. The APC’s outreach, particularly through initiatives like the Ilerioluwa Development Initiative, may influence the outcome of the election.
