Jabalpur police launched a sweeping 24-hour operation targeting habitual offenders, gamblers, and illegal liquor traders, resulting in the arrest of 238 individuals and the seizure of 173 quarters of illicit alcohol. The drive, conducted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Sampat Upadhyay, aimed to curb crime, maintain public safety, and enforce traffic regulations across the district.
Anti-Social Elements Targeted in Raids
The operation, which began on Saturday, focused on disrupting criminal networks involved in gambling, illegal arms, and the trade of unlicensed alcohol. Police arrested 52 habitual offenders and 166 individuals involved in disputes, while 31 people were detained to prevent potential unrest. Two long-absent fugitives and 30 other wanted individuals were also apprehended during the crackdown.
A total of 85 bailable warrants were executed, and police teams set up checkpoints across the city and rural areas to enforce traffic rules and identify violators. A significant number of traffic fines were collected, with 141 drivers penalized and ₹64,800 in fines collected.
Liquor Seizure and Arms Confiscation
During the operation, police seized 173 quarters of country-made and foreign liquor, along with 55 liters of illicit alcohol. The seizure came as part of efforts to combat the illegal liquor trade, which has long been a concern in the region due to its link to public disorder and health risks.
In addition to the liquor seizure, five individuals were booked under the Arms Act, and five knives were recovered. The crackdown also targeted gambling, with three gamblers caught in the act and seven bookies arrested for accepting bets. ₹3,820 in cash was recovered from the bookies during the operation.
Police emphasized that the drive was not only aimed at removing anti-social elements but also at addressing the broader issue of public safety. Encroachments that were obstructing traffic were cleared, and legal action was taken against those responsible under the Police Act to ensure the smooth movement of vehicles.
Continuing Crackdown for Public Safety
Officials stated that the operation will continue in the coming days to maintain law and order and to send a strong message that illegal activities and traffic violations will not be tolerated. Similar actions are expected to be carried out regularly to ensure the safety and peace of the district.
“This operation is a crucial step in maintaining public order and ensuring the safety of our citizens,” said a senior police official. “We will continue to act decisively against those who threaten the peace and security of our community.”
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over rising crime rates and the proliferation of illegal liquor in the region. The operation is also seen as a response to public complaints about gambling and traffic violations, which have become increasingly common in urban and rural areas alike.
Police have also warned that further actions will be taken against those who continue to engage in illegal activities, and that the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
