SYDNEY — A rogue night out at Bondi Icebergs by stars of Channel 9’s Married at First Sight has forced producers to clamp down with early curfews and mandatory drug tests. Insiders say the unauthorized gathering during the second week of filming for the 2026 season left production furious, leading to deactivated hotel key fobs and new rules to rein in the cast.
The evening started as a casual meetup between Gia Fleur and her on-show husband Scott McCristal. Word spread fast. Soon Brook Crompton and Chris Nield joined, along with Luke Fourniotis and Melissa Akbay, Bec Zacharia and Danny Hewitt, plus Rebecca Zukowski solo. A few media figures tagged along too. Photos show the group knocking back drinks and huddling for whispers.
One flashpoint: Danny Hewitt allegedly confessed to Gia that she matched his type more than wife Bec. “Brook and I were sitting at a table with Danny,” Gia, 35, a disability support worker, told TV Week. “Everyone had gone to the bathroom. He was quite drunk and said, ‘Are you happy with your match? Is she your type?’ Then, ‘No, I’d go for someone like you.'” Gia and Brook debated telling Bec, noting Hewitt’s glances at her during the first dinner party.
Hewitt denies it flat out. “There were so many people there,” he told TV Week. “I was never alone with Gia that whole night. Even Scott, her own husband — ask him if he saw me talking to her one-on-one. No one saw it, no one heard it, because it wasn’t said.”
The party stretched past midnight for some. Producers caught wind, especially with media present. “They got in so much trouble,” a source told Woman’s Day. “Producers were furious.” No drugs turned up that night, but the incident triggered weekly testing. Positive results mean immediate exit.
Curfews tightened fast. Cast must return to apartments by 10 p.m. weekdays, 11 p.m. weekends — sometimes earlier. A leaked email, reported by Daily Mail, warned of key fob deactivation post-curfew without approval. Production expressed “utter disappointment,” sources said.
Channel 9 has ramped up oversight. Stricter background checks and psychological screening now apply. Instructions to Endemol Shine Australia: “Go hard on challenging the participants, but keep the drama out of the courtroom,” per Sky News Australia.
This cast proves tough to handle, insiders claim. Tahnee Cook from season 10 echoed the pattern in a 2025 Elle interview. “You’re not allowed to hang out with other brides and grooms off camera, except your partner,” she said. “Production was super strict. Rule-breakers in my season got a 9 p.m. curfew every night.” The Bondi blowout highlights how off-camera antics can derail storylines and force producers to play referee.
