The 56-year-old actor, known for roles in ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and ‘True Detective,’ shared this reflection as he prepares to be honored with Variety’s Legend & Groundbreaker Award. He and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, have three children: Levi, 18, Vida, 16, and Livingston, 13.

McConaughey emphasized the importance of creating “useful” and “enjoyable” work. He compared doing something meaningful to “broccoli that tastes like candy.” Currently, he’s filming the Netflix thriller ‘Positano,’ starring alongside Zoe Saldaña. He described the Amalfi Coast location as a “working vacation,” with the film’s tone “dancing across the sunset,” according to Variety.

Despite his Oscar win for ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ and blockbuster roles in ‘Interstellar’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ McConaughey revealed in a podcast that his most lucrative film remains ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.’ The 2003 rom-com, co-starring Kate Hudson, has earned $177.5 million globally and continues to generate the most residuals for him. “It still pays the best mailbox money of any film I’ve ever done, by far,” he said, as reported by The Daily Beast and Lavanguardia.

The film, directed by Donald Petrie, became a genre staple and remains a favorite for McConaughey. He described his chemistry with Hudson as immediate and natural, with the two reprising their roles in 2008’s ‘Fools Gold.’

Missed Opportunities and Career Shifts

In 2010, McConaughey turned down a $15 million offer to star in another rom-com, marking a turning point in his career. He told Lavanguardia that he was tired of playing similar roles and sought more dramatic work, which culminated in his 2014 Oscar win. The shift also led to notable roles in ‘Interstellar’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’

McConaughey also revealed he had been considered for the role of Joel in HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ series but passed on it. In a podcast, he explained that he was focusing more on writing and was skeptical of long-term TV commitments. “The Last of Us was really good, but to me, it was nothing at that time,” he said, according to Play3.DE. Craig Mazin, the showrunner, had confirmed the early talks with McConaughey in 2023.
