Melissa Barrera was removed from the upcoming installment of the Scream franchise, Scream 7, following social media posts she made about the Israel-Gaza conflict. The decision, announced in November 2023, came amid controversy over her comments, which were described by the studio as hate speech.
Controversial Social Media Posts
Barrera, who portrayed Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), posted on Instagram in November 2023 about the situation in Gaza. In one post, she wrote: ‘Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp. Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING.’
In another post, she questioned why Western media only shows the Israeli side of the conflict, adding: ‘Why do they do that, I will let you deduce for yourself.’
Shortly after these posts circulated, Barrera was dropped from the film. Spyglass Media Group, the company behind the Scream franchise, released a statement stating its position: ‘Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.’
Impact on the Scream Franchise
Barrera’s exit from Scream 7 has left several narrative threads unresolved. Sam Carpenter, her character, was established as the daughter of Billy Loomis, the original Ghostface killer from the 1990s Scream movies. Her internal struggle with her father’s legacy was a central theme in the reboot era.
Scream VI had positioned Sam and her on-screen sister, Tara, played by Jenna Ortega, as the franchise’s new central protagonists. The film followed their attempt to rebuild their lives in New York City after surviving the events of Woodsboro. Sam’s relationship with Danny, a character introduced as a potential suspect, was another subplot left open-ended.
With both Barrera and Ortega exiting the film, the story arcs involving Sam and Tara will need to be reworked or omitted entirely. The franchise appears to be shifting its focus back toward the original generation of survivors, notably Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott.
According to Deadline, Scream 7 is currently tracking for a record-breaking opening, potentially the second-highest in the franchise’s history. This performance is likely to be bolstered by the return of original cast members.
Public and Industry Reactions
Barrera’s firing has sparked calls for a boycott of Scream 7 from some pro-Palestinian supporters and fans of the actress. However, early box office projections suggest that this may have little impact on the film’s commercial success.
Barrera has publicly maintained that she condemns antisemitism and Islamophobia and that her comments were intended as advocacy for Palestinian civilians. Despite this, the studio did not reverse its decision, and production plans moved forward without her involvement.
The incident has also raised questions about the balance between free speech and the portrayal of sensitive political issues in the entertainment industry. With Scream 7 set for release on February 27, 2026, the film’s final form will likely reflect the creative and commercial adjustments made in response to Barrera’s departure.
