Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, titled You Can See Everything, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday. The surprise screening featured the biggest lines of the festival so far and attendees were asked to leave their phones behind. The official logline from A24 describes the film as following Holmes 34 days before she was sent to prison, where she invited a film crew to document her every move.

Documentary Premise and Teaser

The film’s teaser, released Sunday night, shows Holmes insisting she is genuine and has nothing to hide. She says, “I’m not that person. I can promise you that. I don’t have anything to deceive you on; of course, I’m not deceiving you. I’m engaging with you as a human being, hm. Why would I deceive you? There’s no reason for me to do that. … I’m always being real.” The teaser also features Fielder in an intense staring contest with Holmes. According to TMZ, the exchange sent social media into a frenzy, with viewers calling the pairing super awkward and joking that Fielder’s facial expression deserved its own award.

Film Production and Holmes’ Background

The documentary began 34 days before Holmes was scheduled to report to prison in 2023, but the project evolved into a three-year filmmaking journey. Fielder and Oppenheim said they struggled to understand what they were witnessing while filming Holmes and her husband, Billy Evans. Fielder told the Telluride audience he still isn’t sure what to make of the experience and hopes viewers will help him interpret it.

Holmes was convicted of fraud in 2018 in connection with her company Theranos, which she claimed could test for various diseases using only a small amount of blood. She was named the youngest and wealthiest self-made female billionaire in the U.S. in 2015 but was later found guilty of defrauding investors as her technology could not do what she claimed. She was sentenced to just over 11 years in prison, where she currently resides. According to TMZ, her sentence has since been reduced.

Release and Public Reaction

The film is set for release in October. Holmes’ story was previously dramatized in Hulu’s The Dropout, starring Amanda Seyfried. Fielder’s project, however, appears to take a far stranger, more personal approach. The first teaser has the internet completely spiraling, with many noting the unusual dynamic between Fielder and Holmes. The documentary is being described as a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss.
