A Nigerian content creator known as Alado has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding his viral criticism of Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, following allegations that he faced threats from government security forces.
The Road to Controversy
The incident began when Alado released a video in which he openly criticized the state government for the poor condition of its roads. In the clip, he expressed frustration over damage to his vehicle during two separate visits to the state.
According to Alado, his outburst was fueled by the repeated damage to his vehicle caused by the state’s dilapidated road network. ‘First, let me say that I am not afraid of being arrested because we voted you to make our grievances known,’ he said in a recent response.
Governor Abiodun, in a now widely circulated video, responded to critics of his administration, hinting that some individuals attacking his government online could be sent to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. He further alleged that certain critics were sponsored to tarnish his image, though he did not name Alado in the initial clip.
Social media users quickly linked the governor’s comments to Alado’s earlier outburst, leading to speculation that the content creator was the target of the governor’s remarks. Unconfirmed reports later surfaced claiming that security operatives, including officers of the DSS and the police, allegedly laid siege to Alado’s residence following the viral video.
Apology and Denial
In a fresh video response, Alado apologised to the governor for the tone and choice of words used in his initial clip. ‘I would like to apologise for the way I addressed you in the video. I said everything that I said out of frustration because my car was damaged due to bad road the two times I visited the state.’
Alado also denied allegations that he was sponsored to criticise the administration. ‘I will also deny that I was paid to attack your administration.’
The controversy has sparked a broader debate on freedom of expression and governance in Nigeria. Online users have expressed mixed reactions, with some supporting Alado’s right to voice his concerns and others criticizing his use of profanity.
Adebayo Olufemi, a social media user, commented: ‘For goodness sake. When has it become a crime to say the truth. All what the guy said is truth. This is exactly why Nigeria is the way it is and will continue to be like this. Governor didn’t perform and someone is calling him out and that has become a crime. The only aspect I fault the guy is cursing the governor. Please let’s be sensible for once now.’
Another user, @Husaen Agbesinga Bakiyyatu Salaf, wrote: ‘But to say the fact is important to train who lack home training, not because of today is because of tomorrow. Ma worry baba Alado wan kan ma koe logban ni.’
Broader Implications
The incident comes amid growing concerns over the state of infrastructure in Ogun State and the broader implications for public accountability. Legit.ng earlier reported that another Nigerian influencer, Adetoun, publicly criticised Governor Abiodun following the fatal road accident involving world-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua.
The accident has left two families grieving and many Nigerians asking uncomfortable questions about the state’s emergency healthcare response. Adetoun condemned what she described as Ogun State’s poor emergency healthcare response, alleging that the state lacks functional ambulances and often depends on neighbouring Lagos State during critical health situations.
With the recent controversy involving Alado, the issue of public infrastructure and government accountability in Ogun State has once again come to the forefront. Analysts suggest that the situation could lead to increased public scrutiny of the governor’s administration and potential policy changes to address the concerns raised by citizens and critics alike.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the governor’s administration will respond to the growing public pressure and whether any formal actions will be taken against Alado or other critics.
