Nyakach Girls Secondary School, a former national secondary schools’ football champion, has set its sights on lifting the Girls Access to Education (GATES) Super 16 tournament, which will kick off in Kisumu on Thursday. The event, featuring 12 teams, will run from Thursday through Sunday and will be held at multiple venues including Kisumu Day High School, Kisumu National Polytechnic, and Jomo Kenyatta Stadium.
Competitive Field and Strategic Goals
Head coach Chrispine Odindo emphasized that the tournament is not only a chance to win the title but also an opportunity to evaluate team performance and test different formations. ‘As much as we want to lift the trophy, we also want to gauge our team and test different formations,’ Odindo said. ‘We won the national title in 2019, and our target is to reclaim the trophy.’
The competition features several strong teams, including three-time national champions Butere Girls High School, Rift Valley powerhouses St Joseph’s Girls Kitale, and Nyanza champions Kobala Mixed Secondary School. According to Odindo, the tournament offers valuable preparation for the upcoming KSSSA Term Two games.
Pool Battles and Talent Spotting
Nyakach Girls are in Pool A alongside Magina, Saye, and Kwanza. Meanwhile, Pool B is considered a ‘pool of death’ by Kobala Mixed Secondary School team manager Julius Aming’a, who said, ‘All the teams are good. We have many objectives going into the tournament. Winning is one of them, and we have what it takes.’
Aming’a revealed that the team has invited Mildred Cheche, the national Under-17 football team coach, to attend the tournament. ‘We want the national coach to widen the net and capture talent from across the country,’ Aming’a said. ‘The girls have an opportunity to showcase their abilities and earn a call-up to the national team.’
Pool C includes Butere Girls, Kachar, St Barnabas Girls, and Lwak Girls. The tournament is expected to provide a platform for emerging talent and may influence future national team selections.
Broader Football Landscape
Alongside the girls’ competition, the annual Super Eight boys’ tournament will begin on Friday at Kakamega High School and Bukhungu Stadium. St Anthony’s Boys High School, Kitale, Kakamega School, and Highway Secondary School will compete in Pool A with Nyanza’s Kisumu Day High School.
The GATES Super 16 tournament has become a significant event in Kenyan school football, drawing teams from various regions and offering a competitive environment that mirrors national-level play. With teams like Nyakach Girls and Kobala Mixed aiming to make their mark, the tournament promises to be a showcase of talent and determination.
The event not only tests the skills of young athletes but also serves as an important step for those hoping to be noticed by national team coaches. For students, this competition offers a chance to demonstrate their abilities and potentially secure opportunities beyond their schools.
As the tournament begins, the focus will be on how well teams can adapt to the pressure of competition and whether any underdogs can rise to challenge the established powers.
