“Practical Magic 2” opened to $30 million from 4,146 theaters in its debut weekend, according to Rentrak; the film, starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, unseated “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which had led the box office for six consecutive weekends. The sequel, directed by Susanne Bier and costing $75 million, marked the first time the Owens sisters have returned to the screen in nearly three decades.

Return of a Magical Legacy

The film reunites Bullock and Kidman as Sally and Gillian Owens, members of a family of witches whose romantic lives have long been plagued by an ancestral curse. The sequel shows the sisters attempting to end the curse once and for all. It also introduces a younger generation of the Owens family, played by Joey King and Maisie Williams, as well as Lee Pace and Xolo Maridueña in key roles.

“Practical Magic 2” is an adaptation of author Alice Hoffman’s work and arrives 28 years after the original 1998 film — the first film earned $46 million in its first national showing and later gained a loyal following through home viewing and streaming. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” fell to second place with $8.4 million, a 54% drop from the previous weekend, while Meanwhile, “Spider-Man 4” has seen historic success elsewhere. The film grossed $930 million in its first weekend, setting a new record for the best opening in 2026 and the second-best in cinematic history; Only “Avengers 4: Endgame,” which earned $1.22 billion in its first weekend in 2019, outperformed it. In North America, “Brand New Day” earned $360 million in its opening weekend, narrowly surpassing “Avengers 4” in 2019, which earned $357.1 million.

Tom Holland and Zendaya are currently appearing in both “Brand New Day” and Christopher Nolan’s “Die Odyssee.” The latter recently surpassed “Spider-Man 4” in global box office earnings with $45.96 million in the last weekend, bringing its total to $1.627 billion. “Die Odyssee” is the first non-sequel Hollywood film to surpass the $1 billion mark since 2009’s “Avatar.”

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is expected to cross the $1 billion mark in the coming days. It is also projected to become the most successful film of 2026, surpassing Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” which currently holds the record with $1.065 billion in global earnings. “Die Odyssee” could also become the most successful film in Universal’s history if it surpasses “Jurassic World,” which earned $1.67 billion globally.
