Former Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi, who recently joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has dismissed allegations made by Manickam Tagore regarding alleged pressure from the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Speaking to ANI in the national capital, Bordoloi said, ‘Manickam Tagore would definitely say that because now they have to justify. But I’m least bothered by what he’s saying. It doesn’t affect me in any case.’
BJP’s Candidate Announcement and Bordoloi’s Gratitude
Bordoloi expressed gratitude towards the BJP after the party announced him as a candidate from the Dispur constituency for the upcoming Assam assembly elections. He stated that he will work to build a positive rapport with the people. ‘I am grateful. I did not ask anything from the BJP when I decided to join, because what I needed was a platform to work and play a more meaningful role. I have had a long association with public life, having served as an MLA four times and as a minister for 15 years,’ he told ANI.
The BJP announced its first list of 88 candidates for the Assam Assembly elections, fielding both former Congress prominent leaders, Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Kumar Borah. BJP has fielded Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi from Dispur, while Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to contest from his traditional Jalukbari seat.
Prateek Bordoloi Withdraws from Margherita
Meanwhile, Prateek Bordoloi has withdrawn his candidacy from the Margherita assembly constituency after his father, and former party MP Pradyut Bordoloi, joined the BJP. In a letter addressed to the All India Congress Committee President, Mallikarjun Kharge, Prateek said that his continued candidacy would create confusion among the people and the party regarding his commitment after his father resigned from the party.
The developments come as Assam prepares for its Legislative Assembly elections. For all 126 Assembly constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, the Election Commission of India announced on Sunday.
Impact on Political Landscape
Bordoloi’s move to the BJP has significant implications for the political landscape in Assam. His experience and influence as a former Congress MP and minister could sway voters in the Dispur constituency. Analysts suggest that his decision to switch parties may be a strategic move to gain greater visibility and influence in the upcoming elections.
According to political analysts, the BJP’s decision to field Bordoloi and other former Congress leaders could be a calculated effort to consolidate support and challenge the existing political order in Assam. ‘This move shows the BJP’s strategy to bring in experienced leaders from different backgrounds to strengthen their position in the state,’ said one analyst.
Context and Previous Similar Moves
Such political shifts are not uncommon in Indian politics, where leaders often switch parties to align with their political goals or to gain better opportunities. In recent years, several prominent leaders have made similar moves, including former Congress leaders joining the BJP ahead of elections.
For instance, in the 2019 general elections, several former Congress leaders joined the BJP, which had a significant impact on the electoral dynamics in key states. These moves were seen as an attempt to dilute the opposition’s strength and gain an edge in the polls.
Significance for Ordinary Voters
The shift of Bordoloi and other prominent leaders to the BJP may have a direct impact on the voters in Assam. With the elections approaching, the choice of candidates could influence the voting behavior of the electorate, particularly in constituencies where these leaders have a strong base.
Ordinary voters may find it challenging to decide between candidates from different parties, especially when they are former members of the same party. This could lead to confusion and a potential shift in voting patterns, which could ultimately affect the outcome of the elections.
With the elections scheduled for April 9, the next few weeks will be crucial for both the BJP and the Congress as they intensify their campaigns. Bordoloi’s campaign in Dispur will be closely watched, given his experience and influence in the region.
Analysts suggest that the BJP may focus on highlighting Bordoloi’s track record as a minister and MLA to build credibility with the voters. Meanwhile, the Congress may attempt to counter the narrative by emphasizing the potential risks of such a shift in party allegiance.
The upcoming elections in Assam will be a test of political strategy and leadership, with the outcome likely to shape the state’s political future for years to come. The role of leaders like Bordoloi will be key in determining the direction of the state’s governance.
