The U.S. State Department has revealed a limited-edition ‘patriot passport’ featuring former President Donald Trump’s image to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, according to the BBC and AOL.com — this is the first time a living, current president has been featured on a U.S. passport. The design was announced in April and includes Trump’s signature in gold, but the phrase ‘Welcome, but be good!’ was cited by Trump on Truth Social, but it does not appear on the passport itself.
Limited Availability and In-Person Application Requirements
Access to the newly designed document is currently very limited. Americans cannot apply online or via mail for the document and must make an in-person appointment at the passport agency in Washington, D.C., according to the State Department. Only two special acceptance events are currently listed on the department’s website, both at the Washington Passport Agency, though Additional events will be added as they are announced.
Citizens who apply at the Washington Passport Agency will not be given the option to opt out of the special edition, the State Department says, as the regular U.S. passport features historical scenes such as the Moon landing and American symbols like the Statue of Liberty.
Mixed Public Reaction and Social Media Comments
The design has already sparked mixed reactions on social media, as some have called it the ‘most patriotic U.S. passport ever,’ while others have expressed skepticism about Trump’s inclusion. One critic noted: ‘The United States has 250 years of history, and Trump still looked at the passport and thought: Needs more me.’
Others have pointed out that the new passport is not the standard document most Americans receive. ‘Thank God: the Trump image passport is a limited-edition commemorative passport, not the standard passport that most Americans receive,’ wrote one commenter. Some have also questioned Trump’s phrasing of ‘Welcome, but be good!’ with one noting, ‘Is Trump confusing a passport with being granted citizenship?’
Another pointed out a basic distinction between a passport and a visa: ‘US passport is not the same as visa for entering US but Trump doesn’t know that,’ the comment read.
Commemorative Coins and Broader 250th Anniversary Plans
The U.S. Mint has also announced plans for a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump as part of the 250th anniversary celebration this summer, according to the BBC; the coin adds to a broader series of events and items marking the milestone. The passport design includes Trump’s face alongside a depiction of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with the number ‘250’ printed beneath the words ‘United States of America.’
While the White House has the document as a ‘patriot passport’ on its X account, the rollout highlights the limited scope of Trump’s role in official government designations. The design is seen as part of a broader effort to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, though the inclusion of a living ex-president remains unique in U.S. passport history.
