Unite Union has strongly condemned the deadly attacks on Iran by the United States and Israel, calling them a reckless escalation that is costing civilian lives and threatening wider war.
The Human Toll of Escalating Violence
The attacks, which have already resulted in hundreds of deaths, including children, have drawn sharp criticism from the union, which called the actions both reckless and unjustified. According to Tali Williams, Assistant Secretary of Unite Union, the attacks reflect a dangerous pattern of using military force to address political disputes.
“The US and Israel’s shameful attacks have meant hundreds dead already, including children. It’s totally unacceptable that simply because you don’t like a country’s leader, you bomb their civilians,” said Tali Williams, Assistant Secretary of Unite Union.
Williams emphasized the disproportionate impact of such actions on ordinary people. “In every conflict it is the average person who suffers — workers, families, children — not the politicians ordering the strikes. Those in power remain protected while ordinary people pay with their lives,” she added.
International Law and the Failure of Diplomacy
Unite Union has pointed to the lack of adherence to international law and the bypassing of diplomatic processes as key factors in the current crisis. The union argues that institutions like the United Nations and established diplomatic channels are designed to prevent such conflicts.
“We have institutions like the United Nations and established diplomatic channels to resolve disputes between nations. These mechanisms exist to prevent exactly this kind of bloodshed. Choosing bombs over dialogue is a political decision — and it is one that innocent people are now paying for,” the union stated in a press release.
The calls for dialogue come amid growing concerns about the potential for a wider regional conflict. Analysts warn that the current situation is reminiscent of previous escalations in the Middle East, including the 2006 Lebanon War and the 2014 Gaza conflict. Each of those episodes saw a rapid escalation of violence, with civilians bearing the brunt of the destruction.
Criticism of New Zealand Leadership
Unite Union has also criticized New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Luxon for his perceived silence on the issue. According to Williams, Luxon’s failure to publicly condemn the actions of the United States and Israel reflects a lack of commitment to the values of peace and justice that many New Zealanders hold dear.
“The Prime Minister Luxon’s failure to condemn Trump’s illegal actions demonstrates his lack of conscience and conviction on values that matter to New Zealanders — peace and justice. Silence in the face of civilian deaths is not neutrality; it is complicity,” Williams said.
The union is calling on the New Zealand Government to take a more active stance in the situation. Unite Union is urging the government to publicly condemn the attacks, demand an immediate ceasefire, and advocate for urgent diplomatic intervention.
“It is time for the New Zealand Government to take a principled stand and stand with the people of Iran, not the political elites who order such attacks,” the union added in a statement.
The international community is now watching closely to see whether New Zealand will take a more active role in the unfolding crisis. The potential for further escalation remains high, with the United Nations Security Council expected to meet in the coming days to discuss the situation.
