In the wake of two air show incidents in the UK, including a fatal Hawker Hunter jet crash on the A27 that killed 11 people and injured 13 others, safety measures are under renewed scrutiny. A post-Shoreham review had already identified 29 improvements, including updated health and skill requirements for pilots, but Dave Walton, director of Clacton Airshow, emphasized that safety planning is now a year-long process involving military aircraft bids, airspace coordination, and crowd placement. Spectators must be at least 230 meters from displays, though this can drop to 150 meters for helicopters and light aircraft.
Air Show Contracts and Economic Impact in the U.S.
The city of Ocala, Florida, has approved a three-year contract with JLC AirShow Management to bring annual air shows to Ocala International Airport starting in April 2027. The event, titled “Wings Over Ocala Florida Airshow,” will feature the Blue Angels, the famed U.S, Navy flight demonstration squadron, as well as vintage military aircraft, aerial displays, and fireworks. The city’s estimated cost is around $38,000, covering law enforcement and safety support, while the Marion County Tourist Development Council will contribute $100,000 annually for title sponsorship. Revenue exceeding $300,000 will be split 70/30 between the producers and the city — an impact report estimates the event could generate over $4 million for the local economy.

2027 Air Show Schedules and Themes
Shuttleworth Airshow in England has announced its 2027 season, featuring seven events, one more than in 2026 — including a new Season Finale on 25 September. The season kicks off with the Season Premiere Air Show on 9 May, followed by a Military Air Show on 29 May, the flagship two-day Festival of Flight is set for 26,27 June, combining vintage and international aircraft with ground attractions and family-friendly activities. The Summer Air Show in July will highlight American aviation with a theme celebrating the 80th anniversary of the U.S. Air Force.
The 2026 Festival of Flight was widely described as one of the best air shows globally, and Shuttleworth has cited this as a benchmark for 2027. The air show season in the UK and Europe continues to grow, with events like Gijón’s Sunset Air Show and the Clacton Airshow emphasizing both entertainment and safety. In the U.S., the return of the Blue Angels to Ocala marks a 58-year gap since their last appearance there, highlighting the enduring appeal of air shows across generations.
