PENAMPANG — A 33-year-old local man has been arrested by police in connection with an armed robbery at a 24-hour premises in Penampang, which occurred on Wednesday (Feb 25) at 3:57 a.m. The suspect, believed to have been armed with a knife, allegedly stole approximately RM300 in cash before fleeing the scene.
Police Action and Seized Evidence
According to Penampang Police Chief DSP Sammy Newton, the suspect was apprehended less than 48 hours after the incident, following information received by police. A team from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Penampang district police headquarters detained the individual at a hotel in Putatan on Feb 26.
During the arrest, police seized several items believed to have been used in the robbery, including a helmet, clothing, a knife, and a motorcycle. These items were presented as evidence in the investigation, which is being conducted under Sections 392 and 397 of the Penal Code, both of which relate to armed robbery and carry potential penalties of up to 14 years in prison, a fine, or whipping upon conviction.
History of Criminal Activity
According to police, the suspect has a significant criminal background. Checks revealed he has six prior convictions, including offenses related to crime and drug abuse. These records suggest a pattern of criminal behavior that extends beyond the recent incident.
Further investigations indicate that the suspect may also be involved in several other robbery cases previously reported in the district. This raises concerns about the potential scale of his criminal activities and the need for increased police vigilance in the area.
Police have not yet disclosed the names of the victims or the specific location of the robbery, citing ongoing investigations. However, the incident has raised local concerns about safety, particularly in 24-hour premises that are often targeted due to their extended operating hours.
Public Appeal and Community Safety
DSP Sammy Newton urged members of the public to continue acting as the eyes and ears of the police by providing information on criminal activities. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in maintaining public safety and preventing crime.
“Acting on information is crucial in these investigations,” Newton said in a statement. “The public’s cooperation is vital in helping us to combat crime and ensure the safety of our communities.”
Although this case is not the first of its kind in the area, it has renewed concerns about the frequency and severity of such crimes in Penampang. Similar incidents have been reported in the past, with police often relying on community tips to locate suspects and recover stolen property.
The case is currently under active investigation, with police expected to provide further updates in the coming days. Meanwhile, local residents are being advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
With the suspect already in custody and evidence recovered, police are working to establish the full extent of his involvement in the robbery and any potential links to other criminal activities in the region.
