Background and Career

Tarling was born on October 2, 2006, and joined the Israel-Premier Tech Academy ahead of 2025. He continued with the team after it rebranded as the NSN Development Team for 2026. Developing a reputation in European racing as a time trial specialist, he finished 11th in the opening prologue stage of the Portuguese race in Lisbon.

Joshua Tarling, Finlay’s 22-year-old brother, is a professional cyclist for the WorldTour team Ineos Grenadiers and won bronze at the 2023 Road World Championships in the individual time trial.

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred during the eighth stage of the race, which was set between Melgaco and Fafe. According to reports, Tarling was struck by a vehicle that ignored security signals and entered the course in the wrong direction. The collision happened with 22 to 23 kilometers remaining in the 166.8-kilometer stage, after which the race was neutralised and the podium ceremony cancelled. The organizers of the 87th Tour of Portugal stated in a release that they deeply regret the death of Tarling, who rode for the NSN Development Team.

Portuguese police stated that the accident was a “collision between the cyclist and a light vehicle,” but provided no further details. The organizers said they would provide more information once available.

Video footage showed race officials informing the cyclists of the tragic news and asking them to slow down. The race was suspended shortly after the incident.

Reactions and Tributes

Cycling’s governing body, the UCI, expressed its deep sadness over Tarling’s death on X, stating it was “deeply saddened by the tragic death of British rider Finlay Tarling, who passed away following a serious accident during today’s eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal.”

Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also expressed his condolences, stating the news “leaves us deeply shaken.” Stephen Park CBE, the performance director for the Great Britain cycling team, said the team was heartbroken and extended their deepest sympathies to Tarling’s family and friends.

The NSN Development Team added that Tarling will be “deeply missed” and extended their condolences to his parents, Michael and Dawn, his brother Josh, and “everyone who was lucky enough to call Fin a friend.”
