Connor Hellebuyck, the Winnipeg Jets goaltender, has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former President Donald Trump for his key role in leading the U.S. men’s hockey team to a gold medal victory over Canada. The honor, presented during Trump’s State of the Union address, marks the first time an NHL player has received the prestigious award.
Hellebuyck’s Stellar Performance in the Gold Medal Game
Hellebuyck’s performance in the gold medal game was nothing short of legendary. He made 41 saves, including a sprawling stop on Devon Toews that evoked memories of Braden Holtby’s Stanley Cup-clinching deflection in 2018. His efforts were crucial in securing the U.S.’s first gold medal in the men’s hockey tournament since 1980.
Hellebuyck also contributed offensively, tallying an assist by finding Zach Werenski to help facilitate Jack Hughes’ overtime game-winner. This dual impact on both ends of the ice solidified his status as one of the most clutch goaltenders in the tournament.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom: A Prestigious Honor
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor in the United States, comparable to the Medal of Honor awarded to military personnel. It recognizes individuals who have made ‘an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.’
Among the 674 recipients of the medal, only 44—less than seven percent—were recognized for contributions related to sports. Hellebuyck will be the first NHL player to receive the award, a significant milestone in the history of the honor.
Notable recipients include civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, and former U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney. The medal has also been awarded to figures such as Stevie Wonder, Muhammad Ali, and Maya Angelou, showcasing its broad scope.
Trump’s Announcement at the State of the Union
During his address to Congress, Trump announced Hellebuyck’s selection after consulting with his teammates on the U.S. men’s hockey roster. He stated that he conducted a vote among the players before making the decision.
‘Great athletes have gotten that, very great, the best,’ Trump said. ‘I thought he deserved it. I did take a vote—every single one of them. I said, ‘I’m not giving it if anybody goes ‘no,’ and every single one of them rapidly put up their hand.’
Trump also praised the team, calling them ‘special champions’ for their efforts in securing the gold medal. The recognition of Hellebuyck and his teammates during the State of the Union address highlighted the significance of their achievement on the international stage.
Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and first-time Hart Trophy recipient in 2025, is widely regarded as one of the best goaltenders in the NHL. His selection for the Presidential Medal of Freedom highlights his impact both on and off the ice.
The award is a testament to Hellebuyck’s leadership and skill in a high-stakes international competition. As he prepares to officially receive the medal, the hockey community and fans around the world are watching closely to see how this historic moment will be remembered.
