Seven people were killed when a helicopter crashed in northern Kenya’s Samburu County on Wednesday at 9:13 a.m., according to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority; Among the victims were five U.S. citizens, including a Miami-based restaurateur and José Alberto Suárez, a high-ranking executive at NBCUniversal’s Telemundo network.

Crash Details and Response

The aircraft was en route from the Loisaba Conservancy to the Ewaso Nyiro area when it crashed in the foothills of Mount Ololokwe, a popular tourist destination. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed an investigation into the incident was underway. The helicopter, operated by Lady Lori Helicopters, was carrying six passengers and a pilot at the time of the crash.

Local authorities, including Samburu police commander David Nkoroi, confirmed all seven people on board had died, though no identities were initially released. Tropic Air Kenya dispatched two of its helicopters to assist in search and rescue operations, according to a statement from the company.

Victim Identities and Reactions

José Alberto Suárez, 55, was identified as one of the victims. Suárez served as president and general manager of several Telemundo stations in Florida. NBCUniversal issued a memo describing him as a “deeply respected leader and beloved friend and colleague.”

Another victim was Miami restaurateur Roger Duarte, according to a statement from his family, which expressed devastation and heartbreak over his death. The family requested prayers for those who lost their lives and for all who mourn them.

Among the deceased were also Ecuadorian intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and his wife, Stephany Hollihan. The government of Ecuador issued a statement expressing condolences to their families and wishing them peace.

U.S. Embassy Response and Ongoing Investigation

The U.S. State Department confirmed five U.S. citizens were among those killed and stated the U.S. Embassy in Kenya is providing consular assistance to families and local authorities. The department also extended condolences to the families of the deceased.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The aircraft involved was identified as a Eurocopter EC130 B4. The Lady Lori Helicopters statement confirmed the aircraft was operating a charter flight when the incident occurred.
