During a promotional event for his book Young Man in a Hurry in Nashville, Tennessee, Newsom said he would not pursue the presidency if his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, and their four children were not supportive of the idea.
The 58-year-old governor discussed his upbringing, his mother’s death, and his political journey in an extensive interview with CNN, which aired on Sunday. When asked what might stop him from running for president, Newsom said, ‘There are five of them.’ He elaborated that the decision would be made ‘collectively as a family, in partnership.’
When asked if his family supported the idea of him running, Newsom said, ‘It depends on the day.’
Newsom recalled a recent exchange with one of his sons, who texted him a headline suggesting he was preparing for a presidential campaign. Newsom responded, ‘No, I will do this as a family.’ His son replied: ‘You can’t,’ adding, ‘I’m too young. You need to spend more time with us.’
‘How do you deal with that one?’ Newsom asked CNN’s Dana Bush. ‘I’m busted.’
Newsom has been increasing his national profile through social media interactions with President Donald Trump and appearances at international events, fueling speculation about his political ambitions.
He has also been promoting his memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, which details his upbringing, rise in politics, and personal challenges. Critics have interpreted the rollout of the book as a strategic move to position Newsom for a potential 2028 presidential campaign.
When asked if he was trying to ‘redefine’ himself ahead of a potential run, Newsom said, ‘I wish I was that political about it. I wish it was that intentional. I wish it was that Machiavellian of sorts.’
