Gunmen abducted Joseph Kayode, the secretary of Okeluju Local Council Development Area (LCDA), and Easter Akinlolu at a poultry farm in Ondo State on Monday, according to the Ondo Police Command. The abductions occurred at a farm along Kajola Road in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area, and have caused significant unrest in the community.
Abduction Sparks Community Panic
Abayomi Jimoh, a spokesperson for the Ondo Police Command, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Monday. The victims were taken during the early hours of the day, with reports indicating that masked gunmen stormed the farm from a nearby bush. The assailants reportedly fired sporadically into the air before seizing the two individuals and fleeing to an unknown location.
The abductions led to immediate panic in the community, with parents and school authorities closing schools for the day to ensure the safety of children. Local residents described the incident as a rare and alarming event in the region, which has historically been relatively calm compared to other parts of the country.
“The incident has generated significant concern among the residents, especially parents and school authorities, which has resulted in the temporary closure of schools,” Jimoh said in the statement. The police emphasized the need for the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could exacerbate the situation.
Police Launch Intensive Search Operations
Following the abductions, the Ondo Police Command immediately deployed tactical teams and detectives to the area to initiate search and rescue operations. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal reportedly ordered the use of all available operational and intelligence resources to locate the victims and apprehend the suspects.
Security operatives, including both conventional and non-conventional security forces, are currently combing nearby forests and surrounding communities in an effort to track down the perpetrators. The police have urged the public to assist by providing credible and actionable information that could aid in the ongoing operations.
“The command understands the concern this incident has generated among residents and remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property,” Jimoh added. The police are also increasing security patrols in the area to prevent further incidents.
While no official timeline has been provided for the resolution of the case, the police have not ruled out the possibility of the victims being held in a nearby area or being transported to a more remote location. The situation remains under close monitoring, with updates expected in the coming days.
Context of Rising Rural Crime in Nigeria
This incident comes amid a broader trend of increasing insecurity in rural areas of Nigeria, where local government officials and community leaders have become targets of violent attacks. In 2023, similar abductions occurred in parts of Ogun and Ekiti states, where security forces were also deployed to search for missing individuals.
According to a report by the Nigerian Security Network, rural areas accounted for nearly 40% of all reported abductions in 2023, with many incidents involving local government staff and community leaders. The rise in such crimes has been attributed to a combination of weak law enforcement, limited police presence, and the growing influence of armed groups in remote areas.
“The abduction of local government officials is not uncommon, but it is particularly concerning when it occurs in areas where security is perceived to be strong,” said a security analyst based in Lagos. The analyst warned that such incidents could undermine public trust in local governance and lead to further instability.
With no immediate leads on the abductors, the police have called for the public’s cooperation in the search. As of now, the victims remain missing, and the community continues to await further developments.
