Rabat — Morocco’s Justice and Development Party (PJD) has condemned remarks made by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who claimed Israel would be justified in controlling lands belonging to Arab countries. The comments, made during an interview with US commentator Tucker Carlson, have sparked outrage across the region.
Provocative Claims in Interview
Huckabee’s remarks, which appeared in an interview with Tucker Carlson, included the statement: ‘It would be fine if [Israel] took it all.’ He added, ‘They’re not asking to go back to take all of that, but they are asking to at least take the land that they now occupy, they now live in, they now own legitimately, and it is a safe haven for them.’
The comments were described as ‘provocative and dangerous’ by PJD, which called them an ‘affront to the sovereignty of brotherly Arab states.’ The party accused Huckabee of reflecting the ‘true colonial and expansionist policy’ of Israel, emphasizing that such remarks are part of a broader effort to realize the ‘mythical Torah dream of a ‘Grand Israel.’
Regional Reactions and PJD’s Stance
PJD has long opposed Morocco’s normalization of relations with Israel, which was re-established in December 2020. Despite this shift, Morocco has consistently maintained its support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution and a sovereign Palestinian state within the 1967 borders.
According to PJD officials, the comments by Huckabee require ‘all countries not only to denounce and condemn them but also to go beyond weakness and hesitation; and take the initiative to mobilize all available material and moral capacities to confront this usurping entity.’
The party has been among the opposition groups urging the Moroccan government to reconsider its ties with Israel, arguing that the normalization of relations undermines the broader Arab and Islamic stance on the Palestinian issue.
Morocco’s Consistent Position on Palestine
Morocco has consistently emphasized its commitment to the Palestinian cause, even as it has engaged in diplomatic relations with Israel. During the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Morocco has been one of the countries to call out human rights abuses and advocate for a ceasefire, sending vital aid through King Mohammed VI’s Al-Quds Committee.
The kingdom has also supported the establishment of a sovereign and viable Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international consensus. This position has been reiterated by Moroccan officials, including the foreign ministry and the king’s representatives.
According to PJD, the recent remarks by Huckabee reflect a growing trend of Western figures who ‘legitimize’ Israeli policies that are widely seen as violating international law and the rights of the Palestinian people.
As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, PJD is calling for a unified Arab response to counter what it describes as ‘expansionist’ Israeli policies and their international supporters. The party is urging Arab countries to strengthen diplomatic, economic, and moral solidarity to uphold the rights of the Palestinian people.
With upcoming regional summits and international diplomatic engagements, the response from Arab leaders will be closely watched, as the issue of Palestine remains a central point of contention in the region.
