A structural engineer involved in the Obama Presidential Center described the project’s design as ‘something historic’ despite online criticism calling it a ‘monstrous insult to architecture,’ according to Fox News. The center, which opened to the public on Friday, features a unique architectural element— from Barack Obama’s speeches wrapped around the top of a tower, with each letter measuring about five feet tall.
Architectural Design and Public Reaction
The design was described as ‘phenomenal,’ ‘impressive,’ and ‘futuristic’ by visitors who attended the inauguration on the 19.3-acre campus, according to Fox News. The center has also drawn sharp criticism from some online users who referred to it as a ‘monstrous insult to architecture,’ ‘concrete nightmare,’ and ‘monstrosity.’
Chris Bird, a structural engineer based in Washington, D.C., explained the design’s bold approach: ‘The architects knew, along with the client, that they wanted to do something daring on top of the tower, and so the idea of a speech came to life.’ Bird added that the process of shaping and structuring the speech into the building was ‘something without precedent in architecture.’
Memorializing Hadiya Pendleton
Comedian Dave Chappelle described the opening of the Obama Presidential Center as ‘like medicine,’ calling it a hopeful celebration of culture, laughter, and unity, according to CNN. The center also serves as a memorial for Hadiya Pendleton, who was shot and killed in Chicago in 2013, eight days after performing at President Obama’s second inauguration.
Political Reactions and Gunfire Incident
Separately, Vice President JD Vance made headlines in Israel after stating that ‘Donald J. Trump is the only head of state in the entire world who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this moment in time,’ according to CNN. His comments sparked discussions about U.S.-Israel relations and global perspectives on the country.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump faced diplomatic scrutiny after claiming that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni ‘begged’ him for a photo at the G7 summit in France. His remarks were reported by CNN as part of a broader diplomatic incident.
In another incident, Secret Service officers shot and killed a person who approached a checkpoint near the White House and fired at them, according to CNN. ABC News Senior White House Correspondent Selina Wang described the moment she heard the gunshots near the White House North Lawn.
President Trump also highlighted the role of engineers and designers in the creation of his new upgraded presidential aircraft, which was donated by Qatar. He thanked Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for the contribution.
Bird, the engineer behind the Obama center’s top section, said the design ‘gives real solidity to this place and this neighborhood’ and integrates well with the park. He noted that the area architecture, in addition to the building itself, is ‘incredible.’
