Publix, one of the largest grocery chains in the southeastern United States, announced on March 10 that it will discontinue its in-app payment feature, known as Publix Pay, beginning March 19. The move comes as the company continues to expand its physical presence across eight states, including Florida, where it operates 887 stores.
Discontinuation of In-App Payment
The company confirmed in an email release that the feature will no longer be available in the Publix app starting March 19. Customers who previously used the app to pay for their groceries will need to find alternative payment methods at checkout.
“Our pay-with-the-app feature will no longer be available. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” the company said in its announcement.
Publix has not provided a detailed explanation for the decision, but the move could be part of a broader strategy to streamline its digital offerings or integrate with third-party services. The company has not yet responded to requests for further clarification.
Gift Cards Remain Usable
Despite the discontinuation of the in-app payment feature, customers who have saved gift cards in the Publix app will still be able to use them. According to Publix, users can access their gift cards through the app’s ‘Payment methods’ section, scan the barcode, and use them at checkout.
“If you have a gift card saved in the Publix app, you may still use it at checkout. Simply handle to ‘Payment methods,’ tap on the gift card, and scan the barcode that appears,” the company said in its email.
This clarification is crucial for customers who rely on digital gift cards for shopping. It ensures that while the in-app payment feature is being phased out, existing digital payment methods will remain functional.
Publix’s App Ecosystem
Publix currently offers two distinct apps to its customers. The main Publix app allows users to access the latest deals, including BOGO (buy one, get one) items, create shopping lists, download digital coupons, and order subs for in-store pickup.
Separately, the Publix Delivery App, powered by Instacart, enables users to order groceries for curbside pickup at select locations. This dual-app approach allows customers to choose the service that best suits their needs, whether they are shopping in-store or ordering online.
While the in-app payment feature is being removed, the company has not indicated any changes to the functionality of these other apps. Customers can still use the Publix app for deals, coupons, and order management.
New Store Openings Amid Changes
The announcement of the in-app payment discontinuation came just days after Publix opened a renovated store in Clearwater and two days before it plans to open a new store in St. Petersburg on March 12. The new store in St. Petersburg will be 55,454 square feet and include updated design elements such as wider aisles, self-checkout lanes, and expanded deli and bakery sections.
These new and renovated stores reflect Publix’s ongoing commitment to improving the in-store experience for customers. The company has been investing in modernizing its locations to better meet consumer demands for convenience, efficiency, and a wider range of products.
Publix’s announcement about the discontinuation of the in-app payment feature has raised questions about its broader digital strategy. With the company expanding its physical footprint, it may be shifting its focus to enhancing the in-store experience rather than relying heavily on digital payment methods.
For customers who relied on the Publix Pay feature, the change may require an adjustment in how they pay for groceries. However, the company has ensured that existing gift cards will still be usable, and other app features remain intact.
As of now, there is no indication that the company plans to reintroduce the in-app payment feature in the future. Customers are advised to check their preferred payment methods at checkout and ensure they have alternative options available.
