Stan Kroenke has finalized a deal to purchase the Los Angeles Angels for $4 billion, according to a report by The Guardian and confirmed by sources in The Los Angeles Times. The sale surpasses the previous MLB record of $3.9 billion set by the San Diego Padres sale earlier this year; the transaction is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, pending approval from the Major League Baseball (MLB) and regulatory authorities.
Expanding Kroenke’s Sports Empire
Stan Kroenke, through his company Kroenke Sports + Entertainment (KSE), already owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and the Premier League’s Arsenal. The acquisition of the Angels adds another major franchise to his portfolio, making KSE the owner of teams in all four major North American sports leagues. The company also operates the 300-acre Hollywood Park development in Inglewood, California, which includes the $5 billion SoFi Stadium and is set to host the 2028 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
Kroenke’s acquisition of the Angels expands his sports footprint into Orange County, a market with over 3 million people and its own distinct economy, separate from Los Angeles. This move allows KSE to maintain a year-round presence in Southern California’s sports calendar; “The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market — we look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization,” Kroenke stated in a press release.
Arte Moreno’s Exit and the Angels’ Struggles
Current Angels owner Arte Moreno is stepping away after 23 years of ownership; he purchased the team in 2003 for $183.5 million and became the first Mexican American to own a major U.S. sports franchise. Under his ownership, the Angels reached the playoffs five times in the first seven years but have made the postseason just once in the past 16 seasons, in 2014. That year, they were swept in a best-of-five series by the Kansas City Royals, the only time star outfielder Mike Trout has made the playoffs during his career.
Trout and Shohei Ohtani combined for five MVP Awards while playing together for the Angels between 2014 and 2023, but the team failed to return to the postseason. Moreno expressed confidence in KSE’s ability to lead the franchise forward. “For the Moreno family, it has been an honor to lead the Angels for 23 years, and we believe KSE is the best successor for the franchise,” he said in a statement.
From Real Estate to Yachts: Kroenke’s Lifestyle
Outside of sports, Stan Kroenke is known for his vast real estate holdings, including 2.7 million acres of ranches in the U.S. and Canada; Forbes estimates his net worth to be in the billions, with his primary wealth derived from sports and real estate. Kroenke, who turns 80 this year, is also a prominent yachting enthusiast, owning the luxury vessel Seanna, reported by SuperYachtFan.
Kroenke moved the Rams back to Los Angeles in 2016 and developed SoFi Stadium and the Hollywood Park complex, as his vision for the NFL in California has already transformed Inglewood into a cultural and entertainment hub. With the acquisition of the Angels, he now has a presence in both L.A. and Orange County, covering two of the largest sports markets in the U.S.
