In the Examination Room of the East Wing in Resident Evil 9, players encounter a lifeless corpse on a slab, the key to unlocking a valuable treasure. To progress, players must locate and place an artificial heart and artificial lungs onto the corpse, triggering a sequence that allows them to obtain the prize hidden on the corpse’s wrist. This puzzle is a key challenge in the game, requiring careful navigation and precise action.

Acquiring the Artificial Heart

To access the Artificial Heart, players need a Level 1 Security Keycard. This card can be found in the corridor on the upper floor of the East Wing. Once obtained, players should descend to the ground floor of the West Wing, where a hallway near the Parlor contains a Security Level 1 door that can now be opened.

Inside the Custodian’s Office, located in the east room, players will find a Wrench on the desk near the typewriter. Using the Wrench, players can proceed through the West Wing to a door with a handwheel. Interacting with the door using the Wrench opens the Cold Storage, where the Artificial Heart is located.

Obtaining the Artificial Lungs

Players are advised to save their progress in the Custodian’s Office before heading to the Garage in the West Wing. There, they will find a van containing an Organ Transport Box. However, a zombie in a bulldozer will attempt to run them over. To escape, players must shoot the driver of the bulldozer.

Once the Organ Transport Box is obtained, players can examine the back of the item to uncover a puzzle. The puzzle requires the following steps: turn the dial to ‘Hand’ (left), adjust the switch to the middle position, press the yellow buttons (2 and 5) to lower them while keeping the others raised, and finally turn the dial to ‘Auto’ (right). Completing this sequence unlocks the box, allowing players to retrieve the Artificial Lungs.

Those looking to solve this puzzle independently will need the Leatherbound Notebook, which can be found in the Puzzle Box located in the Lead Researcher’s Office.

Completing the Organless Corpse Puzzle

With both the Artificial Heart and Lungs in hand, players can return to the Examination Room. Interacting with the open chest of the corpse allows them to place the Heart and Lungs inside. The order of placement does not matter, but both items must be placed correctly.

Once the items are placed, the corpse will awaken and attack the player. To survive, players must aim for the head and avoid rogue zombie strikes. After defeating the corpse, players will be rewarded with the Security Level 2 Keycard, which grants access to the Isolation Ward and further progress in the game.

The puzzle in the Examination Room is a crucial element of Resident Evil 9, testing players’ problem-solving skills and survival instincts. It also serves as a narrative device, reinforcing the game’s themes of life, death, and the consequences of playing with human biology.
