Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town residents shattered expectations in The Glass Recycling Company’s #GlassRecyclingChallenge 2025. They collected 292 tons of glass bottles and jars at public recycling banks last month, topping the national goal of 280 tons set for the one-month push.
The initiative urged South Africans to deposit glass at banks in the three cities and post their efforts online with the #GlassRecyclingChallenge hashtag. Public response proved strong. Collected glass moved straight back into the recycling stream, bound for remanufacturing into new packaging instead of landfills.
Shabeer Jhetam, CEO of The Glass Recycling Company, called the outcome a proud milestone. “Exceeding our 280-ton target shows what’s possible when South Africans make glass recycling part of their everyday routine,” he said. Jhetam stressed the need for ongoing effort. “The real challenge is sustaining and growing these volumes year on year, so that recycling becomes a habit, not a once-off campaign.”
Glass stands out for its recyclability—100% and endlessly, without quality loss. Still, large amounts end up in South African landfills annually. The company’s yearly challenge aims to change that by keeping recycling visible through public banks and campaigns.
To boost engagement, TGRC dangled R5,000 spot prizes for standout social media posts. Entries ranged from family outings to drop-off points to community collection drives. “A few of the powerful social media entries captured the spirit of the challenge,” according to TGRC.
The drive supports more than the environment. It bolsters South Africa’s circular economy, providing income for glass collectors, transporters, buy-back centers and related businesses. Every recycled bottle sustains those jobs.
“The challenge doesn’t end in November,” Jhetam added. “If we want to see recycling volumes grow—and not fall back—participation has to continue throughout the year. Every bottle still matters.”
The Glass Recycling Company serves as South Africa’s national body for advancing glass recycling. It coordinates across the value chain—from manufacturers and brand owners to waste collectors and processors. Efforts include public banks, awareness drives and community partnerships to loop used glass back into production and support sustainability.
