President Donald Trump traveled to the district of Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie on Wednesday and launched a sharp criticism of the congressman during a rally in Hebron, Ky., calling him ‘disloyal to the United States of America.’ Massie, a libertarian-leaning Republican, had previously voted in favor of a congressional resolution seeking to limit Trump’s war powers following the U.S. strike on Iran, one of only two Republicans to do so. Trump endorsed Massie’s primary challenger, Ed Gallrein, while calling the congressman ‘a loser’ and ‘a chump.’
Iran War Fallout and Public Sentiment
In an exclusive interview with ABC News, Massie explained that many of his constituents have shifted from initial support of the Iran war to concern over its economic impact, particularly rising fuel and fertilizer prices. ‘The first few days the war was popular, but then, as we saw gasoline and diesel prices go up, people started to talk about, you know, ‘what are the goals?’ ‘How long is this going to go on?’
Massie warned that as the war continues, public sentiment among Republicans will turn against it. He added that farmers in his district, preparing to plant crops, were now facing higher costs for fertilizer, which is tied to the global market and could be impacted by ongoing tensions.
Trump’s Social Media Attacks and Massie’s Response
Trump has repeatedly criticized Massie on Truth Social, often referring to him as ‘Rand Paul Jr.’ in a bid to undermine the congressman’s credibility. In response, Massie took a lighthearted approach on X, sharing screenshots of Trump’s posts and quipping: ‘By the way, my name is Ron Paul, Jr.—they mixed me up with Rand and me at the hospital.’
Massie added the ‘face with tears of joy’ emoji and continued, ‘For your reference, after five posts in ten days… I am NOT paying rent to live there.’ The congressman’s response was widely seen as an attempt to deflect Trump’s attacks while also highlighting the absurdity of the comparisons.
Rand Paul, the senator from Kentucky and a longtime ally of Massie, has pledged support for the incumbent in the primary race. Rand Paul is the son of former Texas congressman Ron Paul, a figure often referenced in libertarian circles. Despite Trump’s public criticism, Massie has maintained a strong base of support in his district, where libertarian principles often align with local voters’ values.
Primaries and Party Unity
Massie has represented Kentucky’s 4th District since 2013 and has frequently taken positions at odds with the broader Republican Party, particularly on issues like cryptocurrency, gun control, and foreign policy. Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein in the upcoming primary signals a broader push by the president to rally the base behind candidates who more closely align with his MAGA agenda.
Trump’s recent posts on Truth Social have emphasized his frustration with both Massie and Rand Paul, whom he criticized as ‘repugnant’ and ‘really bad.’ He claimed that he ‘got them elected’ and accused both men of failing to support the party. ‘They are not America First,’ he wrote, reinforcing the divisive rhetoric that has characterized his campaign.
As the 2024 election approaches, the clash between Trump and Kentucky Republicans like Massie and Rand Paul illustrates the broader ideological divides within the GOP. While Trump seeks to consolidate power and promote a hardline nationalist agenda, figures like Massie and Paul continue to advocate for limited government and individual liberty—positions that often put them at odds with the president’s policies and rhetoric.
