NEW DELHI — Australian macadamia growers stand to gain a major foothold in India as tariff cuts slash import duties and consumer trends align with premium nut demand. The Nuts and Dry Fruits Council India hosted MEWA India 2026, the nation’s biggest nuts and dried fruits trade show, where Australian Macadamias representatives connected with food and beverage buyers.
At the event, trade officials noted strong interest in high-end ingredients. Cafes and specialty coffee roasters seek macadamias for desserts, snacks, and innovative menu items. Australia’s duties on the nuts fell sharply to 9% this year, according to Australian Macadamia Society data, paving the way for duty-free access in two years.
“The lower tariffs make our product more competitive,” said Australian Macadamia Society spokespeople after the show. They highlighted India’s booming cafe culture, where local roasters and quick-service outlets experiment with nut-based toppings, pastries, and fillings. Ultra-fast delivery platforms and value-added bakery goods emerged as fresh outlets during buyer talks.
Discussions at MEWA revealed opportunities beyond snacks. Buyers eyed macadamias for cookies, premium chocolates, and restaurant applications. One standout trend: expansion of specialty cafes blending Australian nuts into fusion desserts and savory bites.
Australian Macadamias plans a festival in Mumbai later this year. Organizers drew ideas from MEWA conversations, focusing on product demos and chef collaborations. The event aims to lock in deals with India’s growing quick-service restaurant sector.
India’s market shifts fuel the optimism. Retail formats evolve with more premium experiences, while consumer tastes tilt toward nuts in health-focused snacks. Australian growers, who attended the show to gauge sentiment, left encouraged by direct feedback from importers.
The tariff roadmap stems from trade agreements easing barriers. From 30% previously, the 9% rate applies now, officials confirmed. This structure supports export ramps in a market where nut imports hit record volumes last year.
Beyond cafes, segments like delivery apps and hotel chains show promise. Trade reps discussed macadamia toppings for pizzas, salads, and energy bars. Australian Macadamia Society leaders called India a priority for growth, citing the show’s buzz.
