Spider-Man Dominates Box Office
Filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned $145 million in its second weekend, marking the third-best domestic follow-up in box office history, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film’s total North American gross now stands at $655 million, with a 10-day domestic total that is a record; Internationally, it has already passed $1 billion, making it the second-fastest film to reach that overseas cume, behind only Avengers: Endgame.
With a global total of $1.67 billion, Brand New Day ranks 12th all-time; the film also holds the record for the highest-grossing first week in North America, surpassing $500 million in just seven days. This summer’s box office performance is impressive as well, with the frame reaching $3.985 billion and projected to cross $4 billion soon, according to Rentrak.
Coyote vs. Acme Holds Strong
While Brand New Day continued its dominance, Coyote vs, Acme took the No. 2 spot with $15.4 million over the weekend, the film, distributed by Ketchup Entertainment, earned an A CinemaScore and opened on 3,575 North American screens. Its weekend total included $5.3 million on Friday alone — Critics have praised the film, with a 95 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Coyote vs. Acme had a softer opening than other recent hybrid films, which averaged $23.2 million, according to FranchiseRe; the film was initially shelved by Warner Bros. as a tax write-off, but Ketchup Entertainment acquired the rights for $50 million after public backlash. The movie, starring Will Forte, Lana Condor, and John Cena, is expected to recoup its investment through ancillary markets.
The Odyssey Surpasses Deadpool & Wolverine
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever with $1.352 billion globally, surpassing Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $1.338 billion, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, the film has a domestic total of $516.3 million and is now Nolan’s highest-grossing film at the global box office.
Ryan Reynolds, who played Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine, congratulated the The Odyssey team on social media, acknowledging the achievement, and the film was the first narrative feature shot entirely on Imax film cameras and is now the highest-grossing Imax release of all time. It is also the highest-grossing film of Damon’s, Anne Hathaway’s, and Robert Pattinson’s careers and is expected to be a major player in the upcoming awards season.
