British far-right commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was deported from the United States on Friday after overstaying his legal visa and failing to attend an immigration hearing, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Yiannopoulos was arrested at New Orleans International Airport on Thursday and was issued a final order of removal by an immigration judge on July 22. The 41-year-old had entered the U.S. in 2019 but remained after his authorized stay expired.

Immigration Violations and Deportation

According to a DHS spokesperson, Yiannopoulos “chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation’s laws.” The spokesperson added that the administration is working to ensure “aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport.” Yiannopoulos did not appear to have legal representation at the time of his deportation.

ICE took Yiannopoulos into custody and held him until the removal could be carried out. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security posted a message on X, describing Yiannopoulos as an “illegal alien” and confirming the deportation. A photo of Yiannopoulos, now bearded, was included in the post.

Controversial Political and Cultural Figure

Yiannopoulos rose to prominence as a prominent figure in the alt-right movement and as a vocal critic of political correctness. He was a key editor of the right-leaning news site Breitbart during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign and supported Donald Trump, whom he referred to as “Daddy.” Yiannopoulos also founded the group “Gays for Trump” during the 2016 election. In a 2014 controversy, he was one of the leading voices in the anti-feminist “Gamergate” campaign, which involved doxxing and harassment of a video game journalist.

Yiannopoulos has made numerous controversial statements regarding LGBTQ+ issues and race. In 2017, he caused widespread backlash when he defended relationships between men and boys in an interview, prompting major media outlets and events to cut ties with him. His book deal with Simon & Schuster was canceled, and he was removed from the speaking list at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

Connections to Kanye West and Cultural Influence

He served as Chief of Staff at Ye’s Yeezy company for nearly two years before resigning in 2024. Yiannopoulos was also known for his recent association with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. His departure was attributed to “moral reasons,” though Yiannopoulos himself is not widely considered a figure of moral integrity. His resignation has been linked to broader controversies involving Ye, including his support for Donald Trump and a November 2022 dinner with far-right figure Nick Fuentes at Mar-a-Lago.

Before his deportation, Yiannopoulos had expressed support for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, suggesting that ICE checkpoints be placed at supermarkets, gas stations, and government buildings to combat illegal immigration. His political views have also included calls for traditional values and opposition to what he considers “progressive” social norms.
