Elated Fans Celebrate at the Airport

Cape Verde’s football team were greeted by tens of thousands of supporters at Praia’s airport on Sunday following their historic run in the World Cup, according to the BBC. The team had been eliminated after a dramatic match against reigning champions Argentina.

Jubilant fans transformed the airport into a vibrant celebration, with drumbeats, dancing, and the waving of national flags; the atmosphere was described as a carnival by reporters at the scene.

Goalkeeper Vozinha, whose performances had drawn global attention, said the moment was significant for the team to be with their people; he added that the team had aimed for more but were now focused on celebrating with their supporters.

Historic Performance Against Top Teams

Vozinha, whose real name is Josimar José Évora Dias, spoke to the BBC while wearing a white T-shirt with his country’s name on it; he said: ‘Now we just enjoy the moment and celebrate with our people.’

One fan told the BBC she attended the homecoming to express her gratitude to the team, who represented the World Cup’s second-smallest nation and had never competed in the tournament before. They held their own against giants like Spain and Uruguay.

Fans at the airport chanted and screamed the names of players such as Vozinha and centre-back Pico Lopes; the players took turns to sign autographs on fans’ football tops as part of the celebration.

Independence Day and World Cup Success

The homecoming coincided with Cape Verde’s independence day, marking 51 years since the end of Portuguese colonial rule. The team had entered the World Cup ranked 67th in the world, but managed to earn three group-stage draws, including a 0-0 draw against European champions Spain.

Against Argentina, Cape Verde fell behind to a goal from Lionel Messi, but equalized at 1-1 and forced the match into extra time — they fell behind again, only for a stunning strike from Sidny Lopes Cabral to level the score once more. However, a deflection off Diney Borges from Cristian Romero’s header secured Argentina’s victory.

Cape Verde’s manager Pedro Leitão Brito, also known as Bubista, expressed pride in his team’s performance. He said the team had come within 10 minutes of forcing Argentina into a penalty shootout.

‘We showed that we may be a small country but we can play against the best teams in the world,’ he said. ‘That’s a reason for pride. We made history for our country. They can be proud for representing our country.’
