A drone attack targeted the office of Iraqi Kurdish Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, according to the region’s security agency; the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) confirmed the incident and reported that no casualties were recorded.
Security Agency Office Also Hit
The security and intelligence agency’s headquarters in the semi-autonomous region was also attacked by drones early on Monday. The agency did not specify whether the drones reached their intended targets.
Attack Originated from Iranian Territory
The Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Service stated that the drones were launched from Iranian territory. The agency named the drones as Hadid-110, which targeted both the private office of the prime minister and the Security Directorate residence.
In a post on X, Barzani condemned the incident, calling it “illegitimate and unacceptable.” The KRG confirmed that no casualties were reported as a result of the attack.
Concerns About Regional Stability
Barzani expressed concern that the attack posed a direct threat to the security and stability of the Kurdish region. He emphasized the significance of such actions in undermining peace in the area.
Iran and groups aligned with Iran have consistently accused the KRG of providing a safe haven for Iranian Kurdish opposition groups. These groups are considered a security threat by Tehran.
Iraqi Kurdish authorities have repeatedly denied allegations that they use their territory to threaten neighboring countries. They maintain that the region seeks to avoid regional conflicts and focuses on its internal development.
