An Overseas First: São Paulo Legislates a Mazu Day, Adding the Goddess’s Birthday to the City’s Official Events Calendar
SÃO PAULO — On Oct. 31 local time, at a sub-forum on the spread of Mazu culture in Brazil and China-Brazil cultural exchanges, held at the hall of the South American Minnan Fellowship Association in São Paulo, Brazil, São Paulo City Councilman George Hato announced that the bill to establish a Mazu Day had been approved in a vote of the São Paulo City Council, and that Mazu culture would be included in the city’s official events calendar. It is understood to be the first time a city outside China has used legislation to put Mazu’s birthday on an official events calendar.
